Where Are They Now…Robbie Slater

Where Are They Now…Robbie Slater
Full Name: Robert Slater
Date of Birth: 22/11/1964
Place Of Birth: Ormskirk, Lancashire, England
International Caps: 44 (Australia)
Signed for Blackburn: 1994
Left Blackburn: 1995
Clubs Prior Blackburn: Revesby Workers, Panania RSL, St George, Blacktown, Anderlecht, RC Lens
Clubs after Blackburn: West Ham, Southampton, Wolverhampton, Northern Spirit

Slater is commonly known in Australia as the journeyman. Having travelled across Australia to play football in his early years, Slater was purchased by Anderlecht in 1989 in the role of midfielder. He did not see much playing time here and moved onto lens the following year.

Robert's time at Lens is most remembered for the attack on him by a PSG fan with a baseball bat. Whilst at lens, he was voted Oceania player of the year twice, and met the love of his life.

Robert obviously did enough at Lens to earn a £300,000 move to our beloved rovers. Fortunately for him, he became the first Australian to win the English Premier League, and this was the only season he played with Rovers. Whilst he was only a bit-part player, he was deemed a useful player with him joining West Ham, Southampton and finally Wolverhampton.

After his spell in England, he returned to Australia in 1998 and played out his career with the Northern Spirit in the now defunct NSL.

Robbie is currently a football director at the Newington College, as well as holding the role of football analyst with FOX Sports.

Another GREAT article submitted from a VBer, nice one sasman (only fitting that an Aussie should write this one on a fellow Aussie!)

Slater was not the greatest player we have ever had here (at Rovers or playing in England in general) but he was still a good footballer, and seemed a sound guy as well.
His bloody email address on his RobbieSlater.com (or .net whatever it is) Website doesn't work though as I've tried emailing him SEVERAL times LOL!

Try this one as I think you will find this is his address HDM http://www.robbieslater.com/footballnews.php as a rovers man and an Aussie I was proud that he was a part of the rovers squad that won the premier league. He was a good player for Australia and was a great player for Lens. Whilst playing for them he represented us in a World Cup Qualifying game against Argentina. He played on Maradona for the whole game. We eventually lost by one goal and Argentina went on to do really well in the World Cup. At the end of the game he and Maradona swapped shirts and aparently Maradona told Robbie that he should leave France and go and play in italy as he thought he was that good. He eventually came to Rovers and played a reasonable (not huge but reasonable) part in us winning the league and for that he will always be a legend. Now I just get annoyed when I listen to him comentates the A-League (Australian League) as he has a huge Sydney bias in everything he says but oh well can't have everything. He is still a legend

Rob was a Rovers legend!!!! Only kidding. Always liked the bloke though and he did weigh in with some useful assists. Always loved that celebration against Chelsea, even adopted it as my scoring celebration as a lad! Excellent article sasman.
