'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Martin Dahlin Interview (Part 3)

REGRETS

I don't know if you look back on things with regret, some people don't they just look forward but is there a club that you wish you could have played for but never had the chance?

Real Madrid.

Is there something you wish you could have done or won but never had the chance?

The World Cup. We had the chance but we lost the semi-finals against Brasil

I once read that before you signed for Roma you had been linked with Juventus, with a deal actually falling through at the last minute? If this is true do you regret this not happening?

Yes I do. It was a big disappointment. I had less then 6 months left on my contract so I signed a 3-year contract with Juventus. This was the same year as Bosman won his case so I was suppose to be a free player.

The problems was that in the German contracts there where a clause saying that if the transfer rules changes the contract will be automatically extended with one year. Nobody knew if this clause was valid and it would have taken years to fight it the legal way.

Mönchengladbach asked for too much money and in the end Juventus decided to take another player. I was not happy and told Mönchengladbach that I would never play for them again; in the end they sold me to AS Roma.

Do you think your career would have been any different had the Juve deal not fallen through?

I am sure that it had been different! Juventus wanted me as one of three strikers. In Roma I was one of 5 strikers, Totti, Balbo, Fonseca, Delvecchio and me.

Before I signed they told me that they where going to sell Fonseca and Delvecchio and keep me, Balbo and Totti but in the end all stayed. The competition was very tough and I did not play as much as I was used to so I decided to leave after a couple of months
.

Yet again, an interesting read, but STILL more to come soon!
