Why Did They Bother.....Egil Østenstad

Why did they bother is a segment which discusses some of the flops made in our long history.

This segment is dedicated to Mr Egil Ostenstad, a former Norweigan Striker, nicknamed 'Osten'

Ostenstad was signed up by Mr Graeme Souness in 1999, dropping down a division from Southampton. With a decent strike rate at his previous clubs, he was seen to be the man to help Blackburn into the top flight.

In Egils first season, he scored 8 goals in 28 appearances. Over his 4 year career at Rovers, he managed to score a total of 12 goals, pretty much the amount Santa Cruz has scored for us so far this year.

After a move to Rangers, then a return to Norway, Egil decided to hang up his boots after a 'successful career'. Egil is now Director of Football for Viking in Norway.

Sasmans Thoughts

My memory of Egil is he missing an open goal against Man U, with scores tied and not long to go. Souness talked him up, but he was a flop. I really wonder why we kept him for so long....

He was brilliant for Blackburn........on Championship manager. Didn't we swap him for James Beattie, then swap him for Kevin Davies? Three puddings for the price of none...

He was quality for Southampton against Man Utd - they did the double over them that season, I think he got a hattrick in the home game and beat them 6-3, man utd blamed their grey kit. Then they went and beat them at old trafford... happy times! Shame when he came to us he wasn't up to it.

OK, i have a kinda funny memory to share about "the Eagle" but first, i will NOT be having my lad Grabbi lumped in with the other misfits!!! He was a confidence player and had it not been for the referee feeling sorry for Fabian Barthez and one of his cock ups, had that goal stood, 2nd match of the season, first at Ewood, we may have seen a totally different player. He wasnt bad, but he never got the lucky break most strikers need. Oh and Curtis, for me anyhow, was, along with Matty Jansen, our player of the season the year we got promotion but for some unfathomable reason, Souey went off him and brought in Judas Neill.

OK funny story time. It was New years day, Andy Cole's debut at a chilly White Hart Lane. I was in the away end with about 800 Roverites. The game was a drab affair and half way through the 2nd half, some of the Rovers fans started chanting for Egil. The guy in front of me, an elderly gentleman of approximately 45-55, turned to his mate and said "If we are chanting for him to come on, then we are in trouble" I laughed out loud and he turned and looked at me, then back to his mate and said "see, looks like im not the only one thinking that" Memories eh? Great fun.

For me, aside from being one of the slowest footballers I've ever seen, the key problem with Ostenstad was his role in the whole Kevin Davies transfer saga. If I remember rightly, we signed Davies for £7.5m and sold Beattie to Southampton at the same time for £1m. Then Davies flopped and we swapped him for Ostenstad (and Beattie scored himself silly, earning himself a £6m move to Everton and an England cap). Then Ostenstad was hopeless, and while Davies struggled back at Saints, he moved to Bolton to irritatingly become some kind of talisman. And even managed an international cap eventually. So we effectively gave away two international strikers for Ostenstad. Brilliant.
