Spurs 1v2 Rovers

Tottenham Hotspurs
1 - 2
Blackburn Rovers

White Heart Lane

Sunday 28th October. 15:00

Attendance: 36,086

Apparently nothing fazes this current Rovers team. Whereas the starter menu was dishing up a bowl full of controversy and, in parts, euphoria about Tottenham Hotspur`s current plight, Rovers enjoyed a feast on Spur`s horrid defending.

The first thing Juande Ramos will need to do is instil some grit and determination into Tottenham`s wounded fat-cats and he should take Rovers as the perfect case study.

A solid defensive display was the blueprint for a sixth consecutive Rovers win that catapults them into fifth position.

Mark Hughes stuck with the same team that consummately devoured Reading last week and they were almost in front when David Bentley showed plenty of skill and guile to skip past Lee inside the area but his finish will have a left a sour taste in his mouth as he skewed the effort wide.

This seemed to galvanise Spurs and they were soon doing what they do best, attacking in numbers and with superb skill.

They aren`t like their east London neighbours when it comes to free-flowing football, but they aren`t far off either. They boast some tremendous attacking players and they were certainly putting on a show for watching boss in waiting, Ramos.

But for the age defying Brad Friedel, Tottenham could have been out of sight by half-time. He made excellent saves from a variety of genres in the goalkeeping manual, thwarting Aaron at his feet, tipping away headers from Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane and getting his body behind full blooded efforts from distance.

It`s fair to say Tottenham dominated the first half but Rovers were defending well. Chris Samba was in typical machine mode; everywhere and blocking everything and when he and his fellow defenders of the Rovers unbeaten record were beaten Friedel was there.

However, just minutes after the re-start the deadlock was broken after Spurs were awarded a contentious penalty.

The rapid Lennon burst past Warnock and the Rovers full-back, in a desperate attempt to catch up tangled legs with the England winger. A penalty was awarded immediately but it was a tad on the harsh side.

It was dispatched by Robbie Keane with the ease, belying the precarious situation his team are in.

However, this wasn`t enough. Rovers grouped together to fight back and an equaliser was forthcoming on the hour when Benni McCarthy, who had been a peripheral figure thus far, controlled and hit an instant shot towards goal that looped up off the foot of Michael Dawson and in off the post.

The game then swung backwards and forwards as both teams went in search of the win. Tottenham created the better chances but not even their 16million man could make a difference. Instead it was the eloquent finish of a 6ft 5inch, 400,000 centre-back who provided a winning moment of brilliance.

Chris Samba`s curling shot form the edge of the area after being teed up by Roque Santa Cruz was the cherry on the cake for a fine afternoon`s work by Hughes` men.

Star Player

Chris Samba.

Brilliant defensively and what a winning goal. He is a real match winner.

Player Ratings

Friedel 9

Superb in goal. Made some awesome saves.

Emerton 7

Made some good blocks and supported Bentley well.

Warnock 7

Unlucky with the penalty.

Ooijer 7

Looking good, a bit slow at times and he can get exposed for that.

Samba 9

What a machine.

Bentley 6

A quieter game from him. Should have scored early chance.

Dunn 7

Works so hard now and put in a good shift with his defensive work.

Savage 6

Afternoon ruined again by injury.

Tugay 7

Despite his advancing age he still puts in the work.

McCarthy 6

A true strikers display. Did very little and then scored an important goal.

Santa Cruz 7

Worked hard and claimed an assist.

Mokoena 7

The binman tidied everything up again.

Gamst 7

Showed invention and desire; is he returning to form?

It's late I know but it comes with the same quality and punch of a Chris Samba 93rd minute winner. Another great team performance. Spurs played well and showed their quality in attack but we are a team and that is why we prevailed.

Samba was outstanding and Santa Cruz is real class but to say Spurs played well is overstating it a little bit, it was nowhere close to what we'd been used to before this season and incredibly disjointed and directionless. Full credit to Rovers though, great manager, top work-rate and quality in the final 3rd. Absolutely horrible tackle on Dawson by Pederson though.

Friedel won it

fair and accurate match analysis well done, like you said we could of had it wrapped up if not for friedel, but no matter how well we played we just need points right now, and ramos needs to get this defence sorted quick. As for youselves the last 3 seasons i have seen you play at the lane i have been impressed more so each season. Strong back bone (samba looks a snip and nelsen at half time has underated skills on the ball!) a winning mentality strong in the tackle, and some individually great players, hughes has put the right blend together and his style of football is perfect for blackburn, i can see you going very far this season

Thanks buckers_07. Yeah we are looking good at the moment but we aren't getting carried away. Despite Spurs dominating I think we were value for our win due to the solid away performance. I'm hoping to see more of these ball skills from Nelsen!

yeh look out for him i saw pedersen doing a few flicks at half time then all of a sudden the supposed lumbering centre back nelsen starts getting carried away with some skills too. yeh i think both teams played well a draw would of been a fair result in the end. good luck

so far so good!

I ahve to say I like Spurs, and they were in fairness good for the draw. I was going mental when Samba's shot went in though, amazing!! So chuffed!

Whats going on??? Spurs fans with honest, accurate opinions?? has someone kidnapped chalky???!?! lol... in all seriousness, thanks buckers. Friedel did keep us in but we knew he would. We played ok but took our chances... great stuff.
