Rovers outplayed at Sunderland

3 - 0

Stadium of Light

Injury Ravaged Rovers were made to rue some awful defending, as Sunderland ran away comfortable 3-0 victors, after a wicked deflection off of Ryan Nelsen, further goals from Darren Bent and Gyan sealed the victory for the home team.

Changes were forced upon Steve Kean, with Grant Hanley dropping into right back, Mark Bunn starting in goals and Junior Hoillet earning a rare start.

From the outset, it wasnt good signs for Rovers. Sunderland were faster, hungrier and technically superior as a lucklustre Rovers, apart from glimpses of play, appeared to be disinterested. Sunderland claimed a slice of luck on 10 minutes to earn their first goal of the game. Lively winger Elmohamady sent in a lovely cross, headed down by Darren Bent. Wellbeck was on the scene to strike, earning a massive deflection of Ryan Nelsen and looping into the far corner of the net. 1-0 Sunderland

It was the same right sided play which created the next goal for Sunderland. Elmohamady was given plenty of room, whipping in a powerful cross. This time Darren Bent found himself in pole position, glancing a powerful header into the far corner of the net. 2-0 after 18 minutes!

For Blackburn, the opportunities were few and far between. David Dunn was yet again off his game, whilst Brett Emerton was doing more lateral work then going forward. Junior Hoillet looked lively, trying to outdo his marker, whilst MB Diouf worked tirelessly on his own up front. As for EH Diouf, the crowd was getting under his skin after several frustrating decisions, and Gamst Pedersen couldnt string a pass together...

It just didnt appear to be going right for Rovers, who had their best chance of the half minutes out from the break. Morten Gamst Pedersen struck a bending free kick, EH Diouf getting in behind his markers, but struck his volley from 3 yards out high and wide....2-0 at the break.

Grant Hanley made way after picking up a knock, Benjani coming on in an attack minded substitution. Benjani actually became a thorn in the Sunderland defence, showing signs of the form that made him the main man at Manchester City. Benjani set up both David Dunn and Junior Hoillet, however both failed to take the opportunities. Josh Morris came on for Junior Hoillet with 20 to go in an attempt to freshen things up, whilst David Dunn was relieved of his duties, the colossal Harold Goulon making an appearance.

Blackburn however failed to create a clear cut opportunity through the entire match, whilst Sunderland were happy to sit back and block anything that came there way. Gyan came on late, and showed Rovers how its done. A Pace run down the left flank followed him taking an inside cut and bending it into the far post from 30 yards, bouncing into the net....3-0 Full Time

Benjani- Looked lively and was really our only source of anything that happened up front

Player Ratings

Mark Bunn 5

After his lively debut, would be very dissapointed he didnt get a stronger hand on Darren Bents header

Grant Hanley 5

Not a right back, out positioned several times

Ryan Nelsen 6

Missed his physical partner in crime, the Kiwi just couldnt do everything

Gael Givet 5

Sloppy marking from the Frenchmen. Where has the Gael Givet of old gone

Martin Olsson 5

Left Elmohamdy free twice, and they scored twice. Not a left back by all means

Morten Gamst Pedersen 3

Apart from 2 well struck free kicks, he was abyssmal. Lost the ball several times in midfield, wont be happy especially it was his 200th cap

David Dunn 4

Next worse player on the pitch. Wake up Dunn

Brett Emerton 6

Was stuck with moving from left to right the entire game due to his fellow midfielders not picking up the slack

EH Diouf 6

Not a bad game, but not his best. Should of buried the opportunity to put Rovers back in the game before the break

Junior Hoillet 6

Created a chance out of nothing, tried to hug the flanks as needed

MB Diouf 6

Nothing fell right for Diouf, header strayed wide, but chased every ball down

Benjani 7

Best on pitch. Was our only attacking outlet

Fair points.. but Benjani 7? you must be joking! Hoilett was by far the best player.. and he was taken off for a left back.. however this is only my opinion! :) Sunderland walked all over us today.. just like the Paul Ince days.. tried to attack.. failed.. and couldnt defend!

I agree Benjani 7? Hoillett was our best player today followed by Bent, cos if he could finish it would of been 7-0, We lacked any fire in our bellies. We need a manager and quick cos the Win at WBA don't mean anything as they are currently in free fall and anyone can beat them at present

Player investment is blatantly needed as that flair and drive that is needed to unlock defences consistently is not there. It is really harsh to judge too much as the amount of injuries we have is beyond ridiculous... IMO Hoilett was by far and away the best player on the Rovers side.

I think even mourinho or Fergie even would have struggled with the injuries we've got at present. This was always going to be a tough game so I can't blame Steve Kean for this result. We desperately need some decent players this month. A proven goal scorer, a left back, winger and maybe a playmaker because Dunny seems to have lost his mojo at present.

its hard not to be critical, but that back four really is make-shift and againt a quality sunderland side, was always going to struggle. however, the midfield must improve (particularly gamst and dunn). anf is it just me or did Bunn look a couple of inches too short?

they sacked sam for less than this!

Hoilett was the best Rovers players, sadly most of the rest were simply not good enough. Outplayed, top 5 lets see.
