Aston Villa 3 - Rovers 1

Villa Park, Birmingham

22nd Sept 2010

Attendance: 18,000 or so

Rovers dumped out by Villa (again)

The Rovers were put out of the Carling Cup for the second season in a row by Aston Villa came from behind to give Gerard Houllier victory in his first game in charge of the Villains.

Both teams fielded a mixture of second choice and first team players with changes a plenty to rotate both sides.

Our boys started with Benjani and Junior Hoillett up front as a more conventional 4-4-2 (yes it still exists) was deployed by Sam Allardyce.

The main grumbling point from the Blackburn dressing room and fans will be their distinct inability to hold onto a lead after all the hard work has been done.

After Houllier changed systems to alter the game in the second half it was as if Rovers had gone from a well oiled and drilled machine to a group of people who have never played together before.

Gael Givet opening goal was the best goal of the match by an absolute street but strikes from Emile 'I always score against Blackburn' Heskey and two from speed king Ashley Young put Rovers out and the Blue and Whites only had themselves to blame.

Time for that age old cliche of concentrate on the league?

Three times so far this season we have been ahead and lost... not good enough.

I agree with you there fella, it is a big worry we can't hold on to a lead. It's looking like we're only capable of one goal per game for some reason. Could do with a big win this weekend.

Let's face it guys, u and fulham are probably the best of the rest, the other 10 teams are all avoiding relegation. So why not push for Europe? With everton and Liverpool looking useless go take your chance with 7th place. Lee villa fan.

Interesting how fans from opposing teams view a match. I thought the first hour was probably the worst match I had seen in years. Blackburn had two long range shots, a fine goal and a fine save from Guzan, and Villa had? Very little, a real bore of a game. Then enter, Emile Heskey. I can't believe I am saying this, but the transformation in Villa was incredible and we could have ended up with 5 or 6. Both teams were greatly changed though and you can't read too much into the match. I hadn't realised Blackburn had been ahead so many times this season. I'm sure Sam will get it right. Hopefully Gerard will as well. Good luck.

The majority of goals we have scored this season have been down to bizarrre cock-ups by the goalkeepers. It's not looking good Is it?

To Lee, Villa fan. It would be great to push into the top 7 teams. BUT from what I have seen this season at Ewood we will be lucky if we are not fighting to keep out of the bottom 7 teams. I am normally an optimist with a bias view of Rovers performances. Thank goodness for Samba, Robinson and especially apposing teams errors. Kalinic is skillful and has demonstrated his goal 'poaching' ability this season but desperately needs better quality through balls and a more understanding partner to score goals. (The late delivery of the few through balls played to him often catches him offside, hope the coaches are working on this.)

yeh it an't looking good for us at all, hopefull kallic will score more goals and adding benjani will do wonders or we need to pray that we get takin over very soon. c'mon rovers

Dont want to be negative but surely this is a coaching issue. If we cant hold on to a lead or score more than 1 a game then why is this not down to the manager. I know he can only do so much but the fact that this happens time after time is not all down to the players. They dont decide to sit back after we score. If they were coached better in posession then i feel we wouldnt concede stupid goals but i think they seem more nervous after we score. We have a world of experience in the team but it counts for nothing if we pump the ball up the field as soon as we get it. Why cant we hold on to the ball and play at our own tempo

We don;t hold onto the ball long enough IMO... when we are ahead frustrate the opposition by keeping the ball!
Mikey Delap
it is indeed worrying that we failed to hold onto the lead this season. if we couldn't score, we'd better defend. big sam has much work to do.

Would settle for 20 mikey lol

We are out and need to move on, our league position is far more important, Yes we are playing boring football, and yes i want us to entertain, however it wasnt too long ago many on here were happy to get wins any way we can, whilst me and one or two others said that was not good enough!

Sam needs to sort out his team fast, another screw-up against Blackpool, we will be chasing the likes of Newcastle, Stoke in the league, who have ordinary teams but are far higher up the league table.
metalrover
The thing that us starting to annoy me is I think Big Sam is moulding us to be a negative 1-0 team and it"s costing us at the moment. Newcastle put 6 past villa and Blackpool have played well and scored plenty just playing football like it should be. He needs to sort his tactics.
ITSALLROVER
Maybe Sam needs to get with the times?!
