Blackburn 1 - Hull City 0

Ewood Park

Attendance:

Rovers win for John Taylor!!!

An early goal to Martin Olsson was enough to see Blackburn climb further away from the drop zone, and honour the passing of Rovers fan John Taylor.....

Sam Allardyce once again decided to tinker with his starting 11. Chimbonda was dropped for Salgado, with Olsson dropping into left back. Andrews was called back into the squad, partnering Nzonzi and Emerton in the midfield. Gamst and Diouf held the flanks with Kalinic the lone man up front.

A minutes silence was observed before the match, in the memory of Rovers fan, Mr John Taylor, who tradgically passed away after an incident at the Stoke game.

Blackburn were on the attack from the front, with Nikola Kalinic chasing every lost cause. After a foul by Boateng, Gamst Pedersen dinked a nice little chip into the box, Ryan Nelsen almost picking up another goal, denied by a brilliant save by Myhill. Paul Robinson then stepped up for Rovers as Hull attacked on the counter. Hunt found Vennegoor of Hesselink (VoH from now), and his effort was saved by a diving Robinson.

Rovers took the lead on the 16th minute after some brilliant play down the left flank. Kalinic set up Gamst, who chipped over the top. Olsson had looped around his marker, taking the ball in his stride and cutting into the box. Olsson then blasted from the goal line, the ball collecting Myhill's ankle and slotting into the back corner of the net. 1-0 Blackburn

Olsson continued to look a threat, striking a thunderous right footed volley minutes later, unfortunately straight at the keeper. He was also first to react moments later, though his header drifted wide of the goals.

The 40th minute took a turn of events, and for once, in Rovers favour. Boateng was given a straight red for leading in with his elbow in an aerial challenge against Gamst. SLightly unlucky for Boateng, but he did collect Gamst flush.

Blackburn missed a golden opportunity to go 2-0 before the break. A delightful El Hadji Diouf corner was missed by Kalinic at the near post and Nelsen at the far post.....big double miss.

Rovers took the 1-0 lead into the break, with El Hadji Diouf and Martin Olsson looking extremely dangerous

The opening exchange of the second half started of slowly. Hull had dropped into a 4-4-1 formation, whilst Rovers were just plucking away down the flanks, with great delivery from Diouf, Gamst and Olsson. Emerton and Nzonzi controlled the middle of the park well, distributing the ball out wide immediately, though neither could support Kalinic in attack in the Dunn style. As for Keith Andrews, well, he was his normal self.....

Brett Emerton really should have sealed the points with 20 minutes to go. Diouf picked the ball up in the middle of the pitch, and released Emerton out on the flank. Emerton was through one on one with the keeper, however, the normally clinical finishing of the versatile midfielder went missing, Myhill making a save.

Givet really should of scored minutes later. A neat cross by Gamst Pedersen eluded all, Givet popped up, 2 meters out with an open header. However, the header went straight into the noggin of Myhill, who deflected it onto the crossbar.

Roberts came on for Emerton and Reid came on late for Kalinic as the game fizzed out, Rovers clinching onto a 1-0 victory.

Star Player

I cant split the terrific Olsson and the erratic Diouf. Olsson had a thunderous first half, tormenting the Hull defence at all times, as well as a solid game in defence. Diouf turned up today. Thats all he has to do, turn up. Great trickery on both flanks, some delightful crossed and good work ethic. More of please Dioufy....

Player Ratings

Paul Robinson 6

1 Brilliant save, followed by an absolute howler. ROvers were lucky that his air swing of a corner was not tucked away by Altidore at the far post

Michel Salgado 6.5

His best game in a Rovers Jersey. Looks to have regained some of that pace, solid at the back, nothing much going forward, but a decent performance

Ryan Nelsen 7

Solid from Ryan. Good positioning, very unlucky not to pick up yet another goal from a set piece

Gael Givet 6.5

Looks more assured in central defence then at left back. A good solid squad member, decent performance

Martin Olsson 8.5

A fantastic first half. Im going to give him the goal, how they can call that an own goal is ludacris. Very dangerous, hungry, fast, skillful. Would of liked a stronger second half but cant complain

Steve Nzonzi 6.5

Our central midfield did what they had to do, distribute to our hot players. Nzonzi did that, and won some tackles

Brett Emerton 6

A much better performance from Brett. His flicks actually worked, he let go of the ball much quicker, knowing how Brett is, he would be absolutely gutted at not finishing his chance.

Keith Andrews 5

Didnt do bad, Didnt do good. Just did.....

Morten Gamst Pedersen 7.5

Just give the lad a pay as you play deal. When he is playing for a contract, he is a gun. Great delivery, good movement

El Hadji Diouf 8.5

Best performance in a blue and white jersey. An absolute joy to watch.....and he kept his mouth shut!!!

Nikola Kalinic 6.5

Worked his socks of, no luck up front, the ball just didnt fall his way

Long Throws....

We did not win one header of Pedersen's long throws. We need some variability

Well in lads, another vital 3 points
sasman
Relieved to have held on for all three... Our inability to find the killer 2nd goal could cost us on another day... We need another win this weekend, before the fixtures get tougher and tougher!
metalrover
Good to see them picking up points on the must win matches. 7-4-2 at home is quite respectable.

Also, I think we're playing a lot better without Samba in the lineup. He's a talented player but in Sam's system we focus on getting him the ball instead of taking what the defense is giving us. Without Samba, Olsson fits better into our lineup and he has been a welcomed spark of offense.
SoCal Rover
we are probably the softest team in front of goal in the league. how did emo and givet miss those sitters? noentheless, a much better display and a great win, esp for Mr. John Taylor. why can't we play like this away?
dominator2800
We we're lucky to get away with missed chances, however, a wins a win at this point of the season so I'll accept this happily!!
Walker
Very nice to have a victory, now we can relaxe a bit. Maybe we need a attacking/finishing coach (Shearer is free isn't he) -> don't know the english word for it. The Danish national team have it, and it works out very well......cheers

We would have drawn that game another day due to our annoying inability not to crack in a second or third but netherless A CRUCIAL three points and a good performance as well. What the hell happened to Diouf?! he was freaking awesome!!! I liked the base that was set up - central midfield kept it easy with Brett bombing on and Diouf and Morten were left with the task of supporting Kalinic who did a sterling job up top on his own and chased everything.

was a brilliant performance should of been 3-0 but 1-0 is still good ad i was so impressed with martin Olsson but i am afraid what will happen in the near future, he will leave the club and follow the money to another club and it wouldn't surprise me if it happened the next transfer window?
tanner1para
that's upset me that with them saying it was an own goal, if Drogba or Rooney would of scored a goal like that they would of got the recognition? and saying martin olsson is a left back what was he doing up there, i seem to recall a lot of left backs getting in the exact same position and scoring namely ashley cole and people don't criticize his play, i am dissapointed that everyone always takes it away from Blackburn. even if we had won it 10-0 they will still think we don't deserve to be in the premier league. when are they going t accept that we are the only team outside the top four to win the premiership and get over it? yes we bought it that season but isn't that what a lot of teams are trying to do now mainly man city.
tanner1para
some good points there tanner......i do recall a certain left back who was more commonly known for his efforts in the attacking third.....goes by the name of....carlos, roberto.....remember him? lol
sasman
exactly tanner! the media know nothing! the game was alright, but we should of scored loads more...where benni when you need him? team benni all the way!
LHrover
Pretty obv an own goal, in my opinion- came off the keeper's outside leg didn't it? Hard luck to Olsson, he deserved it. As for Kalinic, yes he works hard, but I've never seen a player on his backside so much. Not sure if he's going to be the star many think he will be. the mark of a great player is time on the ball - NK always looks like he's had a dozen red bulls before the match, far too hurried and falls over like a one legged sprinter. Either he tries to milk free kicks too much, or he's got an inner ear infection?
Desert Kiwi
Martin Carlos!!!!! Get in!!!!
Mikey Delap
To be fair Desert Kiwi - he put in a great shift up top ON HIS OWN! His hold up play was really good and made the back four of Hull look uncomfortable all evening. The makings of a star in my opinion.
Mikey Delap
Good performance other than taking more of our chances! Anyone heard that the one and only Shabani Nonda has had his contract terminated at galatasaray? He wants back in on the EPL and to me is an Allardyce player, as well as being a free agent. Odds on seeing him back in blue n white?!
fransavarese
Big shout that fran but I cant see it personally... good to see John Taylor's family get the win that they deserved as well. Hopefully it will ease the pain slightly, if only slightly.
Mikey Delap
aye i told dale bout nonda yesterday, couldnt get a response so we shall wait and see......still remember the sitter he missed in the uefa cup, if he got that we were through to the next round, 93rd minute,.... lol
sasman
oh, and no negatives about player ratings? crikey thats a first! lol
sasman
Diouf was absolutely awful, constantly falling over, not passing when players were clearly in better positions than him, one word AWFUL! i dont know what match you were watching to give him 8.5, but at Ewood Park, that Diouf was terrible!!!!
Blue n Whitey
Diouf was good, best ive seen him play in the first half! second he didnt do a great deal, but it wasnt half bad! ;)
rover23
u serious blue n whitey? diouf had a blinder lol, his best half in a blue and white jersey.....i think its what game were you watching lol
sasman
I thoguth Diouf was the best I have seen him since last season.
Mikey Delap
reeealy? he took two corners that went straight off, and he kept giving the ball away, was nowhere near to his best! not at all.. i cant wait to get rid of him now, hes a useless player, very negative, would have much rather had hoilett on there!
