Bentley Shines For England

Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley shone on his first start for England on Wednesday evening.

Bentley was handed his first International start for his country by Fabio Capello in the 2-1 win over Switzerland, and despite some newspapers failing to appreciate how well he played (mentioning no names, the Daily Mail!!!) the general thought is that he was one of, if not the star performer for England (probably Wayne Rooney aside, however, the fans Man of the Match Award went to Steven Gerrard). If John Motson, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Hansen, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright can all single you out then you can't have done bad!!!

For a while it looked as though Bents (and England as a whole) might not deliver, but both did enough in the end to suggest that things could be promising. There were chants of "there's only one David Beckham" which were not only aimed at Capello but also Bents after he put a wayward cross into the stands. However, he played some glorious passes, one in particular put Rooney free but his control let him down. A few more showings like this bright start and although Beckham WILL NOT and SHOULD NOT be forgotten people will soon start to appreciate the quality that Bents does have.

I don't think that the Daily Mail has been very fair to him at all, but that's the newspapers for you isn't it!!!
Bents was SUPERB last night, he should be very proud of his performance, Rooney aside I think that he was the best player for England.

I swear he was probably man of the match. I remember him putting Jenas through in the first half to a position where all he needed to do was pass it across and it would have been 1-0. Then he definitely put crouch in with a chipped cross and rooney in with a similar ball, both chances that should have been scored.. I'm sure I remember a 40yard ball that landed on someone's foot very near the goal too. His general crossing was fine if not exceptional also. very proud. Enjoyed Hanson bigging him up at the end whilst looking at Ian Wright as if to say "you're adopted-son should not be starting on the right!"

Hughes Da Man, I think the daily mail was probably trying to even up the score of Alan Hansen's performance after the game. Don't get me wrong, I thought Bentley was very good last night, but Hansen was actually trying to climb up his ass, literally. Gerrard (!!!) got man of the match. I wonder if that had anything to do with him being captain? He didn't deserve it, anyway. Although, he was good in the second half.

Best player on the pitch along with Joe Cole... really made me proud last night did Bents. Some games make or break international careers and Dave delivered big time.

Excellent game - he's been on form all season and played really well against the Swiss - well done and keep it up!

by far the best english footballer this season, i cant think of another player that has come out and performed so consistently at a high level for club and now country! just make sure you sign that new contract!!!!!
whitey_82003
He will I'm SURE!!! (Please sign it Bents lol!) However, what is a contract REALLY worth?!?! It'll just add a few million to an amount won't it, but I genuinely don't think that Bents is looking to leave for a while yet.
Hughes Da Man
Is it time for Mikey and the Maniacs again to make sure he signs it?!??!
MikeyGamst
The way things have been going mikey, get the maniacs on stand by!
