Hughes: Defending Cost Us (Again!)

Hughes: Defending Cost Us (Again!)

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes once again had his defence to blame for the Carling Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal.

I don't want to take anything away from Arsenal as they were really good for the most part of the match (Alex Song was SUPERB!) but the slack, often woeful defending from Rovers saw them 2-0 down inside thirty minutes and left them with a mountain to climb, and even when Roque Santa Cruz was able to score twice to level things up it wasn't to be as Arsenal won 3-2 and Hughes was furious with the defending (again!) that once again left us with too much to do.

Hughes told Sky Sports: "We are disappointed with the way we have defended for all the goals.

"At the moment we're finding it very difficult to give ourselves a platform which enables us to win games.

"It was the same at the weekend. We're conceding too many goals from poor situations - but then showing great courage and determination to get back on level terms.

"The effort that we are expending on getting back on level terms is ultimately costing us.

"We have a tendency to just switch off again and teams can capitalise on that.

"That's what has happened again

It looked all over, then for a while, well probably most of the second half there looked like being only one winner but we can lay a lot of the blame on ourselves at a chance going begging in this seasons Carling Cup, congratulations to Arsenal though and good luck to them in the Semi Final's.

For patches in the game we looked superb, others we looked terrible. I still can't quite understand what Samba was trying to do when he should have simply cleared the ball with his LEFT FOOT not tried the harder option with his RIGHT. It was a great ball through from Denilson but it should have been cut out
Congrats to Arsenal, the talent that they have coming through is frightening, I hope that they can go on and win it now.
If we could get an Arsenal v Chelsea or Liverpool Final that would at least open up another European place via the League wouldn't it!!!

True and good points HDM - I just thought it was a great game of football, similar to the Chelsea FA cup game last season. Arsenal were very good with their finishing (wish they'd stop calling them 'kids' though as they had more internationals than us!) Still wish we start to win these great cup games rather than be the gallant losers

Good point HDM. Samba didnt have the best of games, did he. Really should have cut out that Denilson pass. It looks like the Blackburn defence is going through a bad run of form, and the Arsenal team took advantage of that. Its always a pleasure to drop into vital blackburn.

Poor defense again, but good for Arsenal's Juniors. It was in fact an entertaining game. I hope those moments of well played football became a "90 minutes style" for next games!

If you need extra defence practice i hear Chris Hughton is available
