What Was Emerton Thinking?

What Was Emerton Thinking?

With Blackburn Rovers trailing 3-2 to Wigan Athletic the last thing that we would have wanted was to have gone down to ten men, so WHAT ON EARTH was Brett Emerton thinking???

At 3-2 down with Rovers having already fought back from 3-0 down thanks to two goals from Roque Santa Cruz we were heavily favoured to complete the comeback (and maybe more weren't we!) but then suddenly Emerton had his moment of madness when he lashed out and rightly picked up his second yellow card, which equalled red!

Even then we managed to equalise with Santa Cruz's hat trick goal but ten men then left us with a MASSIVE job to hold onto this point, but even then we could have had more but for missed chances. Once Wigan went 4-3 up with only ten men and chasing the game it was ALWAYS likely to see us leave gaps at the back and we would be caught again, as we were. Defeat isn't being put down to Emerton, but his moment of madness certainly didn't help matters did it.

It was a needless and unnecessary second booking, with a full complement I honestly think that we would have completed the comeback from 3-0 down to have won, his sending off left us with a HUGE job even though we did get back to 3-3 at one point.

I love this guy. But on the one hand he IS NOT a RB. On the other hand, as a winger, he's not good enough, and we do have Bents...

He was bound to get caught out at some point and yesterday was the day. He has a silly habit of doing that. Me and Bom were chatting as it happened and then of course when we equalised but we both knew with 10 men we had too much to do. It is no coincidence that their last two goals came from an unmarked back post!!! Silly boy, although I do feel Clownenburg would have been better advised having a word with Brett as it wasn't exactly that bad!

a rash moment - out of character?
16/12/2007 11:57:00
Surely out of character, all our defence had a shocker, warnock gifted two goals, and samba gifted the first, leave my boy emo alone
16/12/2007 12:32:00
Call it out of character if you like but irrespectively, his selfish and immature action potentially prevented Rovers from maybe even winning this game. I know, in the past we have been used to having a RB that got booked and dissmissed on a frequent basis but still.....Emerton, over the last few weeks, as more and more of the defensive cracks have appeared (from where is a very good and maybe a question for another topic) Emerton has been at the forefront of those. Watch West Ham Utd's attacks in the second half of last weeks game, no coincidence that they all came down their left wing, the goal came from the left too and there was evidence yesterday to suggest that it was the case yesterday also. I have long maintained, even as far back as the summer, the we wanted, nay needed a right back and for the most part, the VBer community seemed to disagree. Well I feel that the problem is now coming home to roost. We need solidity at the back at present as for some unfathomable reason, warnock is going through a sticky patch as is the centre halfs and it doesnt help when our right back is up by the oppositions 18 yard box when they counter. Yes, to a certain point, I agree with your internal dialogue, "But Bom, we have played so well this season and Emerton has been a part of that success" but we arent playing well at present and as RM said to me yesterday, we need to get back to basics. Finally, I will lay upon you a well renowned saying from the sport of American Football that I feel is quite succinct, insomuch as it highlights the issues........"Offence wins games....Defence Wins Championships" You decide which is more important!

Wise words BomBom as always. I might not have agreed that we needed a new right-back, but I'm pretty sure (and I hope that someone can back me up?!?!) that I had wanted Andre Ooijer to be the first choice right-back! Obviously he is currently injuried, but he was my pick. Time for Eddie Nolan isn't it, however, it will probably be the Monk won't it?

The problem is though HDM that whilst Ooijer was a right back he was moved inside by PSV because he wasnt really effective there anymore due to his age, so again, its a short term fix. As for Zurab and Nolan, again, yes they can play there; deputise if you like but they arent dedicated right back. When are Rovers going to either give Tony Kane a bloody chance or go out and buy a fecking Right back that ACTUALLY PLAYS Right Back!

I think that its a bit harsh on Brett - he has been playing really well for us and this has been his worst performance - i thought the sending off was harsh at best, but refs seem to treat our players with contempt. The majority of the players were off their game - you could blame a whole host of things - I was more annoyed about the penalty miss by McCarthy, and us not being awarded a blatant pen later in the game - At the end of the day Hughes picks the team, he wants Brett at right back - thats good enough for me. This was a freak result and we'll get over it, lets not start to go crazy on individuals

Wigan's match is we have 2 tough games this week!
