Benni's Omission Shocked Hughes

Benni's Omission Shocked Hughes

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes has admitted that he was shocked by Benni McCarthy's omission from South Africa's African Cup of Nations squad.

Carlos Alberto Parreira named his 23-man squad last week but one of the major shocks was the absence of McCarthy, something that surprised even Hughes as he was preparing for McCarthy's absence for up to six weeks. Despite reports to the contrary Hughes insists that Rovers put no pressure on anyone for McCarthy to be omitted.

Hughes told Sky Sports: "It was a surprise to Benni initially that he got called back into the squad earlier this year.

"But it was a new manager and, obviously, he wanted to see what options he had. Maybe that's behind it.

"I'd have to speak to Benni because I was unaware of it.

"We haven't put any pressure on Benni or South Africa not to include him, and we were preparing to be without him
."

Personally I'm still also coming to terms with the surprise of this, but it was a VERY pleasant surprise!!!

Still finding it strange to understand why he was left out?!?! It seemed pointless bringing him back as they did to only leave him out again. But I'm happy they did!

If Crouch was to leave us, McCarthy would be the player I want to replace him. On another note, what's happened to Pederson? He seems to have faded away.

Pedersen regularly does fade away, but when he does come back, he comes back with a bang. for a few games lol

McCarthy stormed off home when he was subbed during the Newcastle match... I hope he's not up to his old moody ways again

I think some player (not that it is acceptable) are like this, so although Sparky won't be doing with this he knows what Benni is like doesn't it.
The newspapers are making a big deal of it, but I don't think it's ANYTHING at all.

I not really surprised about Benni being left out of the squad as he's either retired or not, it just shows that SA are just going to give youth a chance, either that or they are not interested in winning it!!

I'm happy that he isn't going, but I am VERY surprised he wasn't selected.
