Hughes Backs Warnock For England

Blackburn Rovers left-back is no stranger to the England International set-up, he might not have made it into the squad since he signed for Rovers, but Mark Hughes is backing him.

Warnock has been superb since he came to Ewood Park from Liverpool and has often been talked about in terms on England honours, but for whatever reason Steve McClaren failed to pick him, not even giving him a sniff. Another great performance from Stevie W on Sunday against Fulham eventually saw him get forward to score the equaliser in the 2-2 draw, and Hughes was quick to put forward his claims for England.

Hughes told Sky Sports: "Warnock has been playing well for quite some time.

"Prior to coming to Blackburn he was involved in the international squad then, for whatever reason, since being at Blackburn he has not been involved.

"When the next squad gets picked he should do enough to get in because it the time he has been at Blackburn he has been outstanding

If Stevie W doesn't get a chance again (to at least get back in the squad) sometime soon I will be VERY surprised.

Sparky doesn't speak a SINGLE word of a lie does he, Stevie W has been superb for Rovers since he signed hasn't he.
Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridge, Nicky Shorey and Joleon Lescott have ALL been used as left-backs for England recently, could Stevie W have done a worse job?!?!

Warnock is a good solid LB!

I thought that Wayne Bridge was terrible for England against Croatia, Stevie W would have done a MUCH better job.

Out of all those players you mention HDM only Ashley Cole is a better left back,
26/11/2007 10:38:00
There are a couple ahead of him, but why not!!! New manager, new team, out with the old

Is Ashley Cole a better left back? Granted he has been a good player - but he hasn't been playing regularly, suffered with injuries and off form since his move to Chelsea (I could be wrong, or just being really biased!) I think Shorey is a good left back and Warnock can't be far off a chance for England... can he?
26/11/2007 11:28:00
shorey has been mediocre for England despite excelling at club level. and yes at that level Cole is a better leftback but the others have been averageish at best.

I have to say that the last england game cole played (that I saw) I didn't think he was that good, saying that he did get injured (Israel I think) Although he was fit and so was Terry - yet McClaren picked neither

I think Steie deserves a crack. How Wayne Bridge played on Wed I will never know! I rate Shorey but think that Stevie is just as good, if not better.

Considering the left back position was once a problem for the England manager, it is good to see competition for this place. I am more than surprised that Warnock has not been called up since his move to Ewood. As everyone has mentioned, he has been playing a blinder, and cannot do any worse than the other left backs that have been picked. I think Cole is good going forward, but lacks in his 'defensive' work (not saying he doesn't defend, he's not the best, though...). I haven't seen enough of Lescott to comment, but I thought he was more of a centre back...? Shorey is a Big fish in a little pond at Reading, so therefore he has no option but to excel there. I have always liked Bridge, similar to Warnock, i.e. solid in defence, and good at supporting his winger going forward. And there's Warnock. So, there is a good arguement that there are more established players ahead of him. Very rarely will get a manager picking more than 2 lefts in a squad. It would take a brave solider to not pick Cole, and Lescott is also cover for Centre half, freeing another position in the squad for a more attacking player. Maybe Warnock, will just have wait a little longer. If you recall, Steve Bruce only had a handful of caps at the end of his career, and he was one the best centre halves england has ever produced. Brian Clough, also. Sometimes the best, don't always get their chance to shine...
