Bentley Ready To Hit The Big Time

Blackburn midfielder David Bentley insists he will 'definitely be ready' to take his chance if selected for England in the friendly against Austria.

England are desperately hoping Israel can get a result against Russia the following day so that qualification will be back in their own hands for the final game against Croatia on Wednesday.

With the players knowing that three points against Croatia is a must, Bentley believes the pressure will be on against Austria.

But the 23-year-old feels he has the mental strength to cope and show what he can do on the international stage.

'As a manager, you are bound to worry about how younger players can handle the pressure and big occasions,' he told the Daily Mirror.

'There's so much riding on the next few days - so much hype and pressure - because when it comes to England games there are no friendlies or low-key games.

'But I believe my head is strong enough and come Friday I will handle it. I'm so up for this it's not true.

'If I get the opportunity then I will definitely be ready to take it. I'm just hoping to get the chance to show what I can do.

'I feel I'm in the best form of my career, but I don't feel I've reached my peak yet. I can improve a lot as a player.

'Playing for England and being involved in the squads has definitely helped me - it gives you extra belief.'

Bentley also gave his backing to under-fire boss Steve McClaren.

'I like the way he is as a manager. Everyone enjoys what he has to say and everyone is behind him.

'He's given me my chance in the squad and now, for me, it's like a progression.

'It's almost like being back in the youth team working my way up.'

MIKEY THOUGHTS....

Play him Steve, there is no reason not to. Its a friendly and to try all possibilities is important for the future as we have little chance of qualifying for the Euros.

Quality player. I wanna see him start against Austria.
Real Deal
Can't see it Real Deal as McLaren will start with his buddy Beckham... nothing like Sven eh Steve!?!?!?! I am sure Bents will come on at some point, hopefully with correct spelling on his shirt as well.

Friendlies by the very nature are designed for trying something new, a concept that Stevie Mac doesn't seem to understand, so as much as starting him against Austria seems the common sense thing to do he won't do it will be!!! Like you say though Mikey I'd expect him to get on at some point.
At the time Beckham came back, it was probably the right time, but it just seems a complete farce selecting him now, what's the point?!?!
Hughes Da Man
McClaren doesn't seem to understand much about football HDM! I reckon he'll start Beckham and say that he needs first team international level fitness back - or some other rubbish! While he continues to pick the likes of Jenas, P. Neville, Downing... I can't see him giving Bentley his chance. The man is a fool!

Is Jenas in the squad again!?!?!?! please god no.
MikeyGamst
good player but behind SWP and Becks in the queue!
merlin
He is a good player... I think better than SWP - Shaun was found out against Russia in both games as was Richards. I think Beckham is just getting his 100 caps and couldn't care less... he just loves the fact that McClaren had to recall him and make himself look more of a fool!

Behind Beckham and SWP.... if he played for Arsenal still I bet that wouldnt be the case.... He is a better crosser than SWP and Beckham sadly is past it.
MikeyGamst
Absolutely Mikey - I like SWP but I think he is as good as he's going to get - Bentley is getting better and better each season

beckham needs games and is still one of the best right sided midfielders on the planet. I do rate Bentley and his time will come. I look forward to seeing him on the right with Ashley Young on the left for England in the future.
DeanoVilla
That would be a good combination Deano... perhaps expect this to start full time for the 2010 qualifiers.
MikeyGamst
I rate Ashley Young a good quick skillful player
