Santa Wants To Bring Rovers Success

Blackburn Rovers strikers Benni McCarthy and Roque Santa Cruz are gaining some comparisons to Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, but Santa Cruz insists a lot more needs to be proved until they fall into the SAS category.

Santa Cruz told the Lancashire Telegraph: "I have read a little bit about Sutton and Shearer. It is nice to be compared to them.

"Shearer in particular is a great player and I used to like him very much. It is great to be compared to that sort of Premiership player.

"But it is no good talking about being like them until we have won a cup or something. Everybody wants to win something this year if possible
."

Until something is won (something that Santa Cruz REALLY feels is possible this season) this comparison will mean nothing to Santa Cruz. However, despite the way some have portrayed his comments he has NOT said that Rovers will win the Premier League this season! They will push as hard as they can but I think we all know that this isn't going to happen but aiming as high as possible is not a bad thing is it, the closer you can reach this goal the better Rovers will do.

He added: "Fans remember the players who win trophies, not just score lots of goals. And we know the Premier League is the most important one.

"Everything is possible in football if the determination is big enough in the team.

"Of course there are great teams in the Premier League but a lot of the time it is about mentality and our team is willing to give it a try.

"We will do everything we can to make it happen
."

The Premier League crown may be the highest aim and goal that is set, but Champions League Qualification is something that Santa Cruz is really targeting this season (along with a Cup, as he said).

He finished by saying: "t is hard and tough even to qualify for the Champions League this year. We will keep enjoying our football, playing the way we have been playing, and see how far we can go."

I say aim as high as possible, the Title WON'T be won, and Santa Cruz is not expecting this, but if you aim as high as this these targets and goals can take you far.
A top six place MUST be the aim this season, but as we have previously spoken about a top four place WON'T be ruled out!!!

Nice piece dude. I like the way Roque is talking and more recently how happy Benni is again. The pair seem to have forged an understandign and look like good friends. This is going to be of huge benefit for the club. We have a very realistic chance of top six this year.

I even think top 4 is not impossible..who says Rovers can't make it.. the only points the leaders has lost so far are those againts Blackburn..there's still a long way..so, aiming high can definitely take Rovers there, but every step has to be taken..and with these "in a row victories" are certainly the correct ones!

Success will come, we just cannot have injuries to players like Bentley, Samba, Friedel, Cruz and McCarthy. With Reid on the way back, we will have more options in the middle

I think we will def finish in the top 6, with 5th place not outta reach, although to break the top 4 would be a massive ask, but again depending on other results especailly from the very inconsistant Liverpool team u never know! A little bit of ambition never hurt anyone in the end now did it!! I would be worried that Santa Cruz is using Rovers to get back into a top european club but hell if he plays well and does to job for us then we acnt complain, well not this season anyway
Clint
We'll just have to make sure we become that top European Club :)
Hughes Da Man
That we will mate, should Hughes stay for a bit and we are in Europe for a few seasons in a row then who knows, we would certainly have the expereince of the European game
Clint
Roque will stay with Rovers as long as he has a contract..and I'm sure Rovers can definitely pretend to fight to earn a place among the TOP european teams, besides, Roque's next team is Olimpia of Asuncion (but in 4 or 5 years)
