Hughes: Important Win Before Break

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes was full of praise for his Rovers side after the 2-1 win over Birmingham City on Sunday, a result which saw Rovers up to sixth in the Premier League.

It was a perfect response to the UEFA Cup exit on Thursday Evening, and was a win that was important with the International break coming up, going into it off the back of win was very important.

Hughes told Sky Sports: "It was a really big performance from us. It was really important we got three points on the board.

"It is always a real negative if you go into an international break following a poor result
."

Goals from David Bentley (with a fine individual effort) and then a second half penalty from Benni McCarthy saw Rovers home (despite a response from Cameron Jerome) with Bentley coming in for special praise from Hughes.

He added: "He is playing well. He is an exceptional talent and he is working hard at his game, which he knows he has to. He is making an impact."

This impact could be such that Hughes also feels that maybe Bents could earn his first England start in one (or both) of the upcoming European Championship Qualifiers with Estonia and Russia?!?!

Going into an International break after defeat would have been terrible, going into with a win sitting in sixth is superb!!!
And why shouldn't Bents start against Estonia, he is certainly a man in form.

Good point sasman. We have previously struggled against 'lower' opposition, no disrespect Sunderland or Birmingham (I am sure Sunderland will say they are the bigger club!). Good to see we can beat these teams.

we started the game a bit tentatively but as soon as the first goal went in we played with confidence... can I be the first to say that Benni was tremendous!!!!
MikeyGamst
You certainly can Mr Mikey, and you have :) lol!
Superb point sasman, it looks as though the corner has been turned (hopefully!!!)
