Hughes To Treat Cup With Respect

Hughes To Treat Cup With Respect

Blackburn Rovers will NOT be wanting to complete a hat trick on Wednesday Evening, as defeat would mean three defeats in a row in three different competitions.

Birmingham City are the opponents in the Carling Cup third round, and after successive defeats in the UEFA Cup and Premiership we will ALL be keen to avoid another defeat. However, with Rovers boss Mark Hughes insisting that he will be treating the Carling Cup with respect he WILL be selecting a strong side as he wants to go far in the Cup.

Hughes told the Official Blackburn Rovers website: "As ever, we are looking to progress.

"We have always viewed cup competitions as a good vehicle for us, believing that they can have a positive impact and historically that is what has happened.

"We've had decent runs in the League Cup and the FA Cup and we've enjoyed them, so we'll try to do the same again this time around.

"We've tried to go in with teams that can win the ties and more often than not we have. It is only when we come up against top four sides in the latter stages (semi-finals) that we've been beaten - usually by the eventual winners of the competitions
."

I'm delighted to hear that Hughes will be going for it in the Carling Cup as it is a competition that Rovers could win (and we are no strangers to winning it are we!), so why not go for it.

GREAT news, as this is a Cup that Rovers CAN win if we really apply ourselves, so with strong sides selected we will have even more chance.

A good win and all will be forgotten soon enough. Give matty a run up front and put Peter on the wing. Maybe Axe in the middle and give Nolan a go. Maybe optimitic this but this is what I would like to see.

Hughes has just stated that he will put out a team that he thinks will win the tie. With Nolan and the Axe in the middle and Peter out wide, do you think that line up is good enough to beat a premiership outfit? If you think of it as a league game against Birmingham, he wouldn't put Nolan, Mokena or Peter in the starting XI, so if he wishes to win this game, he why would be put them in Carling Cup starting XI? It will be either be a full strength team, or a team littered with fringe players. I think Hughes will go for the latter, and anticpate a starting line up of: GK - Freidal DF - Olsen, Samaba, Zurab, Ooijer MD - Peter, Tugay, Mokena, Bentley ST Rigters, Roberts

I wasn't to far out with my starting XI. I could do Sparky's job for him :-). 3-0, a good result. Does anyone know how the Brum 'keeper is doing? The Mirror report states he was 'smashed against the post' by The Wall. Not a pleasant exerience, I would suggest!
