Nelsen Out For Much Of The Autumn

I have just realised that our captain will be the other side of the world for much of October and November.

As captain of New Zealand he is committed to playing in their games on October 13th and 17th, he will then be back with us (with jet lag?) before returning to New Zealand for games on November 17th and 21st. There is no doubt we will miss him.

My worry is that this will cost us points and at the end of the season we will not be as high in the table as we deserve.

Ryan is a very patriotic Kiwi so wants to play these matches. Evidently Fifa rules are such that B.R. cannot prevent him playing anyway. (Sorry Samba but this makes me all the more pleased that your country did not qualify, selfish I know but that's what comes of being passionate about Blackburn Rovers.)

This is a MASSIVE blow for Rovers, and isn't something that I had realised or thought about!!!
The Wall (Samba) is awesome, but God (Nelsen) holds the back line together, so as much as others do a job when they come in God is almost irreplaceable.

God is irreplaceable full stop. He wont be gone for as long as you think but still a big blow but we cant stop him.

guys, we shouldnt have many games in this period anyway. Its an official game, meaning that england will probably have games in that time period also. These are international dates, we wont be the only club affected, but im sure there are limited games in this time

Are we not confident in our cover? Oojier, Zurab, Henchoz. Granted he will be a massive loss, any team losing their captain is a massive loss, but I feel we have the quality cover. I am surprisingly optimistic about this. Must be the weather...

I would prefer Zurab I reckon.... brain meets brawn with Samba and the Monk!!!!

id rather the axe compared with that lot, ooijer prob the most capable of the 3, but henchoz, way past his use by date, and zurab i never rated

Axe is a terrible CB... Zurab for me...

Zurab would get my vote. Mokena is an awful Centre Half...

I'm not as confident in the cover as I am God in the first place.
It is true they might be official International windows but its the traveling involved that might well take its toll as well, I think that is more what r.waterfall is getting at?!?!

Personally I would still go with Ooijer as the partner for the Wall in God's absence, however, I would not rule out the Monk (aka Zurab.)

Maybe we could ask the Axe to "nobble" him around the start of October? Chelsea were more than happy that Alex had a "slight strain" that prevented him from jetting back to Brazil and back, so who knows!

The problem is that Nelson wants to play, and captain, his country. Reading in the Mirror this morming, he will miss four games for us, including Man Utd. Birmingham is one of the other games he will miss. I personally think Sparky will play Ooijer and Samba in the middle of defence, mainly due to match fitness, i.e. he has played more first team games than Zurab. However, if New Zealand are playing qualifiers, would this not mean Emerton may be called for international duty? Leaving a centre half and a right back positions vacant?

When I say Emerton may be called, I do realise that he is Australian, not a kiwi. I meant do Aussie not have qualifers round that time, for the Oceanic Cup, or whatever the qualifying tournament is...?

http://www.squarefootball.net/article/article.asp?aid=4800 I wasn't sure where to put this link, and I'm note sure on how to start a topic, or even if the link is worth a topic. It raises some good points about our 'buying the title' and our football today.

Missing games with Birmingham and Reading in October and Manure and Fulham in November sugests that he WILL be missed more than some might have originally thought!!!

I think we will be okay and it will give Zurab an over-due chance. Zurab is a sound centre-back, very accomplished so alongside Samba he will be fine.
