Benni Sets New Scoring Record

Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy has had a turbulent International career with South Africa in recent years, but now back in the fold he became his countries record goalscorer on Saturday.

McCarthy scored his record 29th International goal for South Africa on Saturday, but he could not prevent his country losing 3-1 to Zambia as Rovers' Aaron Mokoena captained the side. South Africa were beaten but they have still qualified for the African Cup of Nations as one of three best placed runners-up, so this means Rovers will be losing both McCarthy and Mokoena to the tournament early in 2008.

However, Christopher Samba WILL NOT be lost as Congo failed to make the Finals, so although this is very unfortunate for him and his country this is VERY GOOD news for Rovers.

Benni and the Axe will be missed for Rovers when the African Cup of Nations comes round (Benni more so) but Rovers SHOULD have enough quality to cope, had the Wall been away with Congo this would have been more of a loss for Rovers.

I think that is why Hughes bought heavily up front to cover mccarthy's expected absence and Axe's absence will be ok if Sav is fit... good news for US about Samba though!!!
MikeyGamst
If I was Congolese I would feel completely different (and do feel sorry for them) but as I'm not I'm more than happy the Wall will not be missing!
Benni will be missed, but as you say Mikey Sparky bought heavily to cover this, so Rovers will be fine without Benni for a few games, it will give someone else a chance to stake a claim won't it.
Hughes Da Man
I expect rigters may be pushing hard by this point.... whats everyone else's opinion??? may give matty a few starts as well??? As for the wall.. I feel sorry for Congo too but for Rovers it is TERRIFIC news.
MikeyGamst
maybe this is also why gally is only on a loan til xmas and not a full season cos with his return we stil have five strikers and if we get injuries to a striker we will need him back coupled with bennis expected absence
durks de rover
good call durks.

Finally we'll be able to see Derbs on a regular basis {even though he's useful as a sub and maybe a little bit of Roberts...

That is a VERY good call durks de rover!!!
Personally (and not just as he is my favvourite lol!) I think that Derbs will be the man that steps up to the plate to fill in for Benni when he goes of for the African Cup of Nations.

Also congratulations to Benni on gaining the South African goalscoring record!
Hughes Da Man
Yeah musnt forget that... it is an honour just to play for your country let alone break the goalscoring record....
MikeyGamst
It was kind of overlooked wasn't it, but I bet the Bafana Bafana partied WELL into the night.
