Benni Ready To Commit To Rovers?

Is this a false dawn or is Benni McCarthy really ready to commit to Blackburn Rovers as Mark Hughes has hinted at, or so the Lancashire Telegraph tell us he is hinting at.

Throughout the summer (although things have been mighty quiet for some time) all the talk was that McCarthy would be leaving Ewood Park to play for a "bigger club", however, although some did express an interest no actual bids came in, so he has stayed, not that I am saying he has only stayed because he had to!!

The transfer window closes in a weeks time and Hughes is fully convinced that McCarthy will not only still be here, but the suggestion is that he is now ready to commit to the club as the signing of Roque Santa Cruz from Bayern Munich (and others) is further proof of the intentions of Rovers.

Hughes told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Benni had an outstanding season last season, and that's why there was a real determination on our part to make sure he was in a position to have another one this year.

"I think he's excited by what we've done with the squad in the close season, and he knows himself that he's at a good club, and he's got an opportunity to be successful here, so I think he's quite calm about the situation, and he's glad to be here
."

The biggest challenge for Rovers has not been convincing players to come to Ewood, but not only convincing (which shouldn`t be hard) players to stay but fending off possible interest from others for the star names, which has been achieved and will be further by the time the window closes. Hughes believes that much of this is down to the board and the promises they have kept that players WOULD stay.

He added: "I've been given the backing of my chairman and the board and they said I didn't have to sell anyone, and that's the case

"They've been good to their word and I haven't wanted to sell anyone either.

"We've still got a week to go but I'm not too concerned about people leaving, and certainly less so than I was about a month ago.

"But that's half the battle (keeping hold of your best players). This time last year was exactly the same. I had to make sure we didn't lose key personnel, and that's what we did
."

As much as I am convinced that Benni (and others) will stay, I'm not entirely sure how Sparky's comments can really be fully viewed as him believing that Benni will commit his future to Rovers? (this depends on how long comit means?!?!) I have no doubts that he will be here a week Saturday (after the transfer window closes) and for the rest of the season, but I would not say 100% that I believe just yet that he will see out the third, and final year of his contract? That depends on how this season goes.
The players that Rovers HAVE kept this summer are worth more to the club than signings that have come in, however, those that have arrived are quality names.
It's a constant battle to keep hold of these players but so long as they keep performing, Rovers will keep doing well so keeping, and better still ADDING to them will always be possible.

I've pretty much written an article on the article itself with my comment lol!

It all depends on this season, if we do well and finish 5th or 6th or higher i think we could get benni on a new contract, chelsea and co dont come in for him. like hdm im not completely sure he will be here to see out his third year, all we can do is hope!!

I think benni is biding his time but his age may work against him... he will be over 30 shortly...

I think the age issue will work severely against him. Another year at Rovers, which WILL happen, will see him start next term aged 31! I think we will see Benni at Rovers for a while yet. On the other hand, if Santa Cruz has a Benni style season, that will be tough to keep hold of, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I do agree with the comment that the players we have kept have been more important than signing new players.

Think is good he will stay and at the end of this season he will be too old to move so he won't i don't reckon if he stays this season, hopefully that injury he got won't affect his game to much because he might have a lil fear of going in, in the air. But well done Benni did the right thing staying if you do!!!

I'd say we'll use him for 2 more seasons- and then at 32 sell him for as much money as they'll offer..

At the end of the season Rovers will have a decison to make won't they, will it be more worthwhile rejecting offers that come in for him then let him leave for free at the end of next season, or cash in on him to get maybe £5 million for an aging (yet still quality) striker?!?!
Personally, with Rovers having the power I think it would be just as well keeping him until his contract ends as the money they could sell him for COULD potentially be far less that the money his goals could generate. Basically Rovers (providing he stays for the WHOLE of this season, as he WILL) are in a win win situation!

come on! he's peeved no one has come in to give him the chance to play in the CL!
merlin
still a chance Jose could poach him :-)
merlin
Rovers might offer him that next season anyway :) lol!

lets hope so hdm!!!
