Rovers Draw MyPa In The UEFA Cup

The draw for the Second Qualifying Round of the UEFA Cup has been made, and Rovers face a two-legged encounter with Finnish club Myllykosken Pallo-47, better known as MyPa.

A pre-draw was made earlier this morning, which narrowed Rovers' possible opponents down to one of the following:

Myllykosken Pallo-47 (Finland)
SK Liepájas Metalurgs (Latvia)
FK Ekranas (Lithuania)
HJK Helsinki (Finland)
Drogheda United FC (Ireland)

With the draw, which took place in Switzerland (a short time ago) pairing Rovers with MyPa, who currently sit in 4th sport in the Finnish League and have a wealth of European experience. They can also boast having helped star names such as Jari Litmanen and Sami Hyypia (who started his career with the club) to stardom.

The First Leg will take place in Finland on Thursday 16th August 2007, with the Second Leg at Ewood Park two weeks later on Thursday 30th August.

Should (as you would expect, but we will NOT be taking this for granted) Rovers overcome this obstacle a place in the UEFA Cup proper will be guaranteed, with the First Round matches taking place in late September, with British quartet Aberdeen, Bolton Wanderers, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur entering the competition at this stage.

It WON'T be an easy match, and ideally we could have got an easier opponent but Rovers SHOULD have too much class and quality for their Finnish opponents shouldn't they, so a place in the UEFA Cup proper is getting even closer now!!!

You should be fine especially with the second leg at home, that always helps.
sw6cfc
SHOULD be, like you say though the second left at home is a BIG help.

GOing to be tough game, hopefully won't suffer from tiredness against Arsenal on that sunday. Will be tough but Rovers will pull through im sure.

Did a little research on MyPa (i.e. looked at wikipedia!). Their ground wouldn't look outo f place in the conference league. They have recently won their domestic cup (2004) and league (2005). They have had Finnish stars of Jari Litmanen, and Sami Hyypia play for them. They are currently ranked 183 in the European standings, 120 place below Rovers. I think we should be ok. The away leg may be tricky with the crowd, albeit a modestly size crowd (max capacity 4000 and few) being virtually on the pitch. We shoudl see them off in the home leg.

Grand, fact of the matter is if we can't beat teams like this we don't deserve to be in European competition anyway. So bring 'em on...

Decimus Poole - I'm affended dude, you can't have read the article as I revealed in that that MyPa had Litmanen and Hyypia play for them before :( I won't sleep tonight now LOL! I think they played Liverpool a few years back and they spanked them in the away leg, think Owen got a hat-trick?!?!
theirishrover - That is a GREAT point dude, above anything else, like you say if we can't beat them we DON'T have any right being in the UEFA Cup.
Hughes Da Man
Good point Irishrover but thats why we will beat them, we do deserve to be here, we can go very far. Also is they produced Hyppia and Litmanen then maybe Hughes might spot some up and coming players from their current team if they have any.
roverjoy
well said HDM. I didn't fully read your article, and i do apologise.
Decimus Poole
Nah, I was only kidding dude, no worries :)
Hughes Da Man
Its alright DP... i'm a skim reader too!!! lol

Respect these lads and we willbe fine. Hughes has instilled a hard working and professional ethos into this club that previous managers failed to create and that will be the reason for our success over two legs.
roversman
We do need to show respect you are right roversman but I am always wary of teams I know nothing about!!!! Trelleborgs anyone?!?!?
MikeyGamst
I don't know the full history of MyPa by any means but they are not that much of an unknown to me to be honest guys, I hear about them virtually year in year out through European Competition, which they are no strangers to.
They won't be easy, and should without doubt be respected (as roversman says) and they will be, but will still be beaten!!!
Hughes Da Man
Skim readers, what is wrong with you lot!!! You would NEVER catch me doing that..........much :) LOL!
Hughes Da Man
Mypa are relative unknowns but to echo the sentiments of our editor they are a club you always hear a whisper about at this time of year. On Champ (poor comparison tool I know) they are a decent outfit but by no means a match for Rovers. We will topple them!
