Rovers In The Hunt For Whittaker?

Blackburn Rovers are battling it out with two other clubs for the signature of highly sought after Scottish defender Steven Whittaker.

23-year-old Whittaker has been linked with Rovers before (as had his former Hibernian team-mate Scott Brown, who signed for Celtic for £4.4 million) and reports from the BBC are saying that Rovers are again trying to lure the right-back (a position MANY feel needs addressing!!!) to Ewood Park, but Rovers will have to battle with Middlesbrough and Glasgow Rangers for his signature.

Former Scottish Under-21 International's Whittaker and Brown are both highly rated in Scotland, with many clubs in England and Scotland having been linked to the pair. With one (Brown) having already moved on from Easter Road the other will also do the same in the next few days for an amount believed to be between £1.5 million and £1.8 million, with him holding talks with interest teams on Tuesday.

Whittaker's agent, Ken Anderson has told BBC Sport:

"A deal for the sale of the versatile player could be completed within the next few days."

Meanwhile other talk (in the Daily Star) is saying that Mark Hughes is eying up a move for Kansas City Wizards striker Eddie Johnson, currently playing in the MLS.

This WON'T happen as the American International had already turned down a move to Derby Country last week, saying then he would rather stay in American at this point in time, not forgetting the fact ANOTHER striker is NOT needed for sure now!!!

All along I have said that personally I DON'T think we need a right-back (but then again I also said we didn't need a striker, but was VERY pleased when Roque Santa Cruz arrived!!!) but Steven Whittaker is VERY highly rated and can play in a number of defensive roles and in midfield so his versatility could make him a VERY GOOD signing?
Eddie Johnson WILL NOT come to Rovers (I don't mean he wouldn't because he probably would!) as he is not needed is he!!!
Hughes Da Man
He can play in midfield too though and to have competition at rite back will be no bad thing, U have to remember that Oojier id the wrong side of 30 and why not get this young lad in to learn from a seasoned international
Clint
Emerton would still be my choice at riteback as he works so well with Bentley and although can be caught out positionally at times, this will come to him, especailly as he trains with Ooijer, Nelson etc. Its good that we can attract big name players but also players for the future as well - Rigters is one to mention
Clint
Yeah i would always prefer Emerton at right back, gives us such a good attacking threat, plays so wel with Bentley and gives us a break out of the defence with his ability to dribble if we are under pressure. Im glad that Eddie Johnson said he doesn't want to leave America, was shocked when i saw earlier we were linked to him. Please no more strikers now. This Whittaker might be useful being so versatile if we didn't have Ooijer then i would say sign him, but we don't really need him.

OK, first off, i really feel that I have to point out to all the Emo lovers that he will not get any better at RB than he already is. WHy, you ask? the answer is simple....you really think that this is the first time he has played there? He was a winger in Sydney and when he moved to Feyenoord, he played at RB and gradually got converted into a Wing back because "he was too attack minded for a RB" When he signed for us, he turned Newcastle down because "His transfer to Blackburn was noted by the fact that he apparently turned down offers from larger clubs so that he could play in his preferred position on the wing"

That says it all, its not that maybe he couldnt get any better defensively, but he will not allow himself too as this would compromise and hinder his attacking side.

Back on topic, I dont know much of this lad in all fairness but I am glad we are finally looking at RBs as I think we need one due to what i have put above, plus the fact that maybe Ooijer has one season at RB in him, that was the reason PSV moved him from RB in the first place and maybe Tony Kane and Nolan arent ready to be starting members of the first team.

Regarding Eddie Johnson, I don't think that he'd be very successful in the Premiership. Being from the U.S., I've seen him play many times. He's outstandingly quick but his finishing is really frustrating. His goal scoring has been great this year under a new coach but last year he was atrocious (2 goals in 19 games). I'd have to say that the MLS is every bit as physical a league as the Premiership, but the speed of the game in MLS is seriously lacking. Eddie Johnson thrives on the fact the the MLS is slow. In the Premiership his pace wouldn't provide nearly as many opportunities as it does now. Even though I like him he definitely would be a bust in England.

He does have an element of versatility but does have the attributes to succeed in the Premiership. I dont think we need him so I am undecided.... having said that as Benni said... the more competition the better.

From the beeb: Rangers are close to beating Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough to the signature of Hibernian right-back Steven Whittaker, BBC Sport believes. Sources close to the club have indicated that negotiations about the transfer are nearing a conclusion.

Ah well, if they get him they get him... He is handy but not crucial to moving forward.

Rovers have DENIED any interest anyway haven't they (but they would wouldn't they?!?!)
Personally, I liked the sound of him (especially his versitility) but STILL don't think a right-back is a high priority just yet!!!
Hughes Da Man
I think we could do with a reinforcment but it isnt critical!!!
MikeyGamst
You wouldn't back against Hughesy after his latest signing!
