Blackburn Rovers Talent Scouts

I just mentioned talent scouts, in my response to an article on here, which has got me thinking about them more.

Mark Hughes gets all the credit for these wonderful bargain finds but shouldn't some of the credit go to the talent scouts or does Mark find these players himself? As for negotiating the bargain fees, presumably that is not entirely down to Mark either.

So when we read how fantastic Mark Hughes is in the transfer market we should be reading of how fantastic the Rovers transfer 'TEAM', alongside Mark Hughes is.

Anyone know anything about our scouts?

VERY GOOD point r.waterfall.
We often forget that Sparky has people that work around him, so we can't ALWAYS give the credit simply to Sparky. Although in fairness many of us usually say the Rovers team (or at least mean this when we simply just say Sparky).
As for the scouts themselves, I can't say I know too much about them (I should really!!!), but I know what I need to, and that is they help unearth some REAL hidden gems!!!

Yes very good point, but still Hughes has the overall say on the players and im sure he gets ton's of options from his scouts, so he should get credit for that. Also the way he seems to trial most of his signings before he buys them, somehting a lot of other clubs don't seem to do, or you don't hear of them doing. But good point all we need now is a replacement gem for Tugay.
roverjoy
That also is a VERY good point dude. Maybe these Scouts bring the players to his attention but he has to put his head on the block and have the final say. A real team efforts.
As for trialing players, that is true very few do this. I don't know if it is becasue they are worried if they hand back someone else might poach them or not?!?!
Sparky, and the Scouts will find the Tugayesque replacement don't worry about that dude.

every club has a network of scouts who are invaluable, but how much do they get paid? and do they get a finders fee when a player gets signed on? if not they should do.
Dales_Dad
Our scouts are def the best in the league. With the limited finances, we manage to pull at least 1 gem year after year. Bentley, Nelsen, Samba, Warnock, McCarthy just to name a few
sasman
Hmmm...a finder's fee would probably be a bit of a double edged sword dontcha think? The manager would be inundated with recommendations, most of them far from worthwhile, from scouts desperate for a payoff. As far as the situation at Rovers goes, the success we've enjoyed in the transfer market just goes to demonstrate the value of a tight knit professional backroom staff, we're lucky to have them.
theirishrover
Hear, hear to both sasman and theirishrover's comments.

Scouts come in two shapes... those directly attached to the club and freelancers. The "employed" scouts typically concentrate on local "feeds" such as schools and lower league clubs, they usually feed into the Academy system. The freelancers are often sent to to "report back" on specific targets that may have come to the club's attention. Information is either based on general info in the business or (where the real bargains are found) from "affliated" clubs both at lower and european league levels. On top of that Agents will often "tout" players around seeing whether a club might be interested. When it comes to big deals often the Manager or head coach will also go and watch a player in action, this is why you'll also see managers and coaches at other cup games and international competitions.
Ex Ewood Resident
In the case of Matt Derbyshire... he was already working for Rovers as a Community Youth Coach and whilst training at Brockhall caught the attention of the first team coaches and Sparky.

It's crazy the way it worked out for Derbs isn't it!!! It was just one of those things that was meant to be I guess.
Hughes Da Man
dont care who does it just as long as they keep doing it for rovers but they are bloody impressive how they find all these guys though! one point though i thought that nelsen wrote to hughes stating who he was and who he played for asking for a trial and hughes said okay(he also wrote to a number of other prem clubs aswell) so i dont think the scouts spotted him
durks de rover
LOL, good point dude I like it "I don't care just keep doing it!"
You know what, I think you are right that is what God did, so just imagine if a different side had taken him up on the offer!!! I think the fact that Rovers gave him the break is why he HAS and WILL remain loyal to Rovers.
