Andre Ooijer Happy To Be Back

Blackburn Rovers defender Andre Ooijer is happy to be back playing, having been out since January with a broken leg.

The Dutch International captain got off to a nightmare start to his career at Ewood Park, but found his feet (as I, and others knew he would!) to establish himself as a VITAL part of the Rovers defence, until injury ruled him out for the rest of the season. It was feared he would be missed immensely, but Christopher Samba stepped up to the place to form a formidable partnership with Ryan Nelsen.

Having returned to training over the summer, the 32-year-old has played his part in Pre-Season, and scored on Sunday. However, the form of Samba and Nelsen makes it likely that The Wall and God will form the first choice centre-back pairing, so he will be looking mostly at playing in a right-back berth this season?!?!

However, Ooijer is just happy to be back playing again after the frustration of the injury layoff, and he has set his sights on a place in the starting XI that take on FK Vetra in the Intertoto Cup on Sunday.

Ooijer told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website:

"It's great to be back after six months out.

"I played a half against Wrexham last week and then another 80 minutes against Bielefeld, so I'm still building up, but it's getting better every time I play and every time I train.

"I don't feel any pain in my leg anymore, so that's the most important thing.

"I really hope I'm ready for the Intertoto. My leg is ready, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.

"It's been frustrating because you just want to play. I came to Blackburn and after the start I had, I felt I was just getting up to my normal level when I broke my leg
."

It is GREAT to have Ooijer back, his experience and quality will be a MASSIVE help to Rovers this season.
Personally I can still see him playing a major role this season, with this role being as the right-back (something that is VERY familiar to him anyway) as The Wall and God are almost certain to be the starting centre-backs.

Agree totally!! He was coming into his own before the unfortunate leg break and it will be great to have him back for the start of the season. He and Emerton will provide good competition for each other for the right back spot in my eyes!

I think Emerton will continue as rite back, for his crossing and the fact that he's quicker and more attacking. Oojier will be good cover to the backline and his experince is invaluable. He may well be used in the bigger games cos he is a better defender than Emerton and has to tactical now how over Samba's raw talent

Oojier is only good 4 cover in defense. we need a new rb and he is not as good as smaba and nelson.
Derbyshire4England
Still think Ooijer will be more than just cover this season, he WILL fight Emerton for the right-back spot, and still say we don't NEED to bring in a new right-back.

The thing is Ooijer's getting 33. Pace is the most important thing in the PL- so I think this season will be his last as RB (even though C Short made great things at his age at CB)

Difficult one for Sparky this, Ooijer better than Emerton in defending but we would miss Emertons pace breaking out into attack when we need to score (allways). Team selection in the R.B. position is probably going to depend on who the opposition is a nd whether the manager thinks defencivly or of breaking out attacking play. As a spectator I would enjoy watching Emerton more and he had a terrific season, sorry Ooijer but you would definatly be on my bench with Dunn and one of our three strikers. Eventually we need a complete player with the ability of both R.B.s combined, where is he? no doubt our talent scouts will be on the look out to tip off Sparky.

There it is, the comment that prompted your article dude (which I am about to publish.) I still maintain the view that we have the right-backs for this season at least and Eddie Nolan is the long-term replacement, so Sparky and his scouts should be looking for another gem elsewhere.

i watched eddie nolan closely in the uefa cup match against nancy in which he played and i thought he played very well so i look forward to seeing more of him in the future and also tony kane should be coming through, i was reading that he enjoyed his loan spell with cercle brugge which is good to hear
