Savage Relishing The Competition

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage is looking forward to the challenge ahead of him of keeping a starting place in the Rovers midfield this season.

When ALL of the Rovers midfielders are fully fit there will be some real competition for places this season (this is healthy for the players themselves AND the club!!!) which will be great after the struggles that often occurred last season after injuries to key figures like Savage and Steven Reid.

Sav made his return from his broken leg on Tuesday with the Pre-Season game with Wrexham (scoring what proved to be the winning penalty) and is using the extra competition for places from others as something to give him extra motivation. The former Welsh International told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website:

"I think we've got a great chance, there's a huge pressure on places but it is great.

"I've had that all throughout my career, if somebody is trying to take your shirt it makes you work even harder. Towards the end of last year - even though we had a great finish to the season - in games where the gaffer might have wanted to make changes he couldn't really because there wasn't enough bodies.

"So if everyone can stay injury free we can have a great season, maybe add one or two more players it'll be great.

"The bigger the challenge, the better response and that is the most important thing for a player
."

Competition is ALWAYS healthy, it not only keeps people on their toes (as is essential!!!) but also gives Sparky alternatives.
The Axe showed last season that he CAN fill in for Sav if needed, so he will have to be VERY much on his guard this season won't he.

Mokoena more than stepped into Savages shoes last year, at times he did a better job. We did miss Savages energetic approah however and I am looking forward to seeing him fit and raring to go once more!

Its just not the same without Sav there. Now he is back we are better off for it.

has evreyone 4got about david dunn. hes a classy english talent that needs to play more

Savage adds another dimension....So strong and never misses a tackle. However he turns 33, and along with old Tugay we need cover for the future: Time will tell if Dunn is the same Dunn we remember. If not at least bring Danny Murphy-30 , or Tom Soares-21. Owen Garvan-19.5 is also interesting (and why not Ben Watson-22???)

Giles Barnes anyone????
MikeyGamst
IsraeliRover - Murphy wouldn't really be looking to the future would it dude?!?! Soares and Watson, both good players but Premiership quality? I'm not sure??? Don't really know much about the other guy.
MikeyGamst - Yeah dude, Barnes would be a GREAT signing, so when derby go down we'll get him!!!
Hughes Da Man
savage seems to compensate for his lack of ability by being overly aggressive, and is prone to yellow and red cards.
Dales_Dad
When Derby go down!?!?! Isnt that tempting fate?? lol
MikeyGamst
Dales_Dad - He may lack ability but he still has FAR more than he is credited with. The card issues is not as bad as rumour would suggest, sure he picks up a few yellows (and some for VERY tupid things) bur red cards, he has only EVER had two I believe?!?! One for Rovers (two yellows) and one for Wales (again two yellows).
MikeyGamst - I meant it slightly tongue in cheek, but forgot my LOL!
Hughes Da Man
This will be Savages last season in top flight football, I honestly beleive he will decend the league, it will be nice to see him kicking people in Cola League.
