Rovers Duo in England Squad

Rovers Duo in England Squad

Stuart Peace has named David Bentley and Matt Derbyshire in his England under-21 squad for this summers European Championships.

With Pearce having to narrow down his initial selection of players Bentley and Derbyshire have not been axed, and they will be a part of a strong looking England squad heading off to Holland early next month.

Bentley, fresh from his senior call up, will return to the under-21's for the Championships after the senior games with Brazil (friendly) and Estonia (European Championship Qualifier) for what will be his under-21 swansong. Even if Bents doesn't become a regular in the senior side (which if he carries on playing like he has he wont have a problem!) he would almost certainly be too old for the under-21's next season.

Derbyshire on the other hand will still qualify (I believe) so will be looking to press home his claims for senior involvement through his continued participation in the under-21's and further progress with Rovers next season.

Mark Hughes is apparently concerned by Bentley's involvement, as he feels this could lead to burnout. Personally with only a few games being played at these Finals (not forgetting the fact Bents is 21!) he should be fine and ready for our Intertoto Cup adventure at the end of July.

Full under-21 squad
Ben Alnwick (Tottenham), Scott Carson (Liverpool), Joe Hart (Man City)

Leighton Baines (Wigan), Gary Cahill (Aston Villa), Anton Ferdinand (West Ham), Justin Hoyte (Arsenal), Nedum Onouha (Man City), Liam Rosenior (Fulham), Steven Taylor (Newcastle), Peter Whittingham (Cardiff)

David Bentley (Blackburn), Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham), James Milner (Newcastle), Mark Noble (West Ham), Nigel Reo-Coker (West Ham), Kieran Richardson (Man Utd), Wayne Routledge (Tottenham)

Matt Derbyshire (Blackburn), Leroy Lita (Reading), David Nugent (Preston), James Vaughan (Everton), Ashley Young (Aston Villa).

OMG we have another ajwb/chalky whoever else. Isnt it worrying bents is playin for the 21s, he has had a busy season, prob the first where he had regular first team season, he really needs a break before the next season if we want to make a strong charge

You just learn to ignore it don't you dude! Bents is a 21-year-old kid, who hasn't really had a great deal of first team football the last few years so he shouldn't be tired. He will still get a little break after the under-21 Championships so I am not too worried. Besides next season with players back from injury Sparky can always rotate things round more so players don't have to play so many games?!?!

I think it is a p***-take him being called up to the U-21's and if I was him I would be tempted to refuse. He has been knocking on the England door all season and been consistent (far more than Lennon, Wright Phillips or Beckham), he ws waited for his chance and what happens?? Beckham jumps ahead of him in the queue!! Then to rub salt into the wounds, he gets the U-21 call-up. I think Beckham deserves his call-up to the squad, he is in good form for a form team - but isn't it time England started looking forward - instead of backwards?

I reckon the blame has to be laid at Stuart Pearce's door, he didn't have a clue at Citeh and has even less at the FA

Wellsy - I think I disagree slighty dude, we (England) will want to win the under-21's tournament won't we, to do this we will need our better players, and Bents is DEFINATELY just that. Sure, he could rest up over the summer but I'm sure he would rather be playing football (plus it's not as if he has been withdrawn from the senior set-up has he?!?! He hasn't has he?) I was all for Becks being dropped from the starting XI but NEVER for him being treated as he was by Stevie Mac as there isn't ONE player that gave us much for his country as Becks has over the years, Lamps just strolls around all game, Stevie G is the one that seems to get the most pride nowadays. I would have been tempted to tell Stevie Mac to ***** off when he came crawling back to me if I were Becks, but he wouldn't do this for reasons already mentioned. Back to the Bents points I don't have a problem with him making a final stnd with the under-21's.
