Bents Gets the Call

It seemed like it was never going to happen but today we can raise a glass for David Bentley, Rovers` player of the year, as he has earned his first full call-up to the England squad.

Following another sterling display in an England shirt on Friday playing for the England 'B` team, Steve McClaren has finally doe what everyone has been crying out for him to do and select Bentley for full honours.

Before I continue, I also want to say well done to McClaren for finally growing a spine and re-calling David Beckham, although this may hamper Bentley`s chances of playing, and for also including Nicky Shorey in the squad.

This is call-up for Bents is just reward for a terrific season where he participated in 51 of Rovers` 53 games, scoring seven goals. His distribution and range of passing and vision from Rovers` right flank has been a key to the clubs success this term. We can only hope that he will be given a chance to represent his form for country in the forth coming friendly against Brazil or in the qualifier against Estonia.

His performance against Albania on Friday at Turf Moor must have been the proverbial icing on the cake for McClaren. His performance finally caught the eye of England`s 'visionary` manager.

Let`s just hope there isn`t any kind of Matt Jansen luck waiting for Bents and he will can become the first Rover since David Dunn in 2002 to play for England!

Full England squad:

Goalkeepers: Robinson (Tottenham), Carson (Liverpool), Green (West Ham).
Defender: P Neville (Everton), R Ferdinand (Man Utd), Terry (Chelsea), Bridge (Chelsea), Brown (Man Utd), Carragher (Liverpool), Dawson (Tottenham), King (Tottenham), Shorey (Reading).
Midfielders: Beckham (Real Madrid), Gerrard (Liverpool), Jenas (Tottenham), J Cole (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Bentley (Blackburn), Carrick (Man Utd), Lampard (Chelsea), Downing (Middlesbrough), Dyer (Newcastle).
Forwards: Crouch (Liverpool), Owen (Newcastle), Smith (Man Utd), Defoe (Tottenham).

Bents4eng

Bents4eng
Congrats to David!

ABOUT BLOODY TIME!!!!! No need for the maniacs.
MikeyGamst
i'd rather have Bentley in the squad than Stewart Downing!

LOL at the times online http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/article1845195.ece "McClaren revealed that he included the 22-year-old Arsenal product at the 11th hour, in the light of the knee injury that has left Aaron Lennon doubtful for both games" Typical. I hope he gives MaClaren a major headache if he does get his caps by having storming games and challenges him NOT to select him. Good luck Bents!
BomBom
Don't be so quick to recall these Maniac's Mikey!!! At least Bents is in, this is a start. I'd think he'll play a part of the friendly with Brazil but find it less likely that he will feature against the mighty Estonia?!?! I echo the thoughts within the article hats off to Stevie Mac for recalling Becks.
Hughes Da Man
I maintain Lenon is possibly the most overrated Englishman around
Bents4eng
Shows what a joke our country is when these players are in the team after the seasons they have had in some cases, and the averageness in others: Robinson (Tottenham), Carson (Liverpool), Green (West Ham). P Neville (Everton), Bridge (Chelsea), Brown (Man Utd), Dawson (Tottenham), Shorey (Reading), Crouch (Liverpool), Owen (Newcastle), Smith (Man Utd), Defoe (Tottenham). Especialy the strikers, an absolute joke.

I personally wouldnt of had Nugent in to start with against Andorra... but to play him, him to score and then drop him is not the way to do it!!!!
MikeyGamst
Congrats to bents, he prob will get little if any time but at least he finally gets a chance. Hopefully McClaren wont call him up for the U21s anymore giving him a decent break in the off season
sasman
Lets just hope he is given a chance against Brazil and maybe a performance against Estonia. Go on Bents
roversman
Stevie Mac is in a no one situation in a way isn't he, but he does himself little of no favours does he. I'm totally with you Mikey WHY select Nugent, let him score a debut goal then drop him when others are injured in favour of ALAN SMITH, sorry but ffs what is wrong with Stevie Mac?!?! Bents will almost certainly (surely?!?!) play a part against Brazil but still don't think we see much (if anything) against the might of Estonia, this would be too risky lol!
Hughes Da Man
Congrats to Bentley, think it is a travesty that Jenas and Shorey got in ahead of Gareth Barry though.
mackaavfc
Thanks mackaavfc, it is a travesty that Jenas gets in ahead of ANYONE dude! Barry certainly has MORE than enough quality to be in the squad, why Stevie Mac keeps looking past him I don't know?!?!
Hughes Da Man
Shorey is awesome but Jenas is pap... nobody likes Spurs, we all know that.
MikeyGamst
Shorey is the new wave of England player isn't he (or should be) I notice that Jenas is riding high in this poll! If he "wins" then we will have to be prepared for another Spurs invasion and verbal war!?!?! I love it, bring it on!
Hughes Da Man
It is about time he is a far better player than Downing.
