Bentley's "Stormer" for England

Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley made a superb start to his senior England career with a fine display against Albania. Bents4eng shares his thoughts on England and Bentley's display.

Another night of disappointment for England fans across the country... (no wait we won... abandons pre-written intro about how England ALWAYS fail to perform and play unattractive and dull football).

Bentley's first senior England cap and what a stormer it was!

Yesterday big Mac talked about the need for experience in the England set-up if we are to qualify for the Euro 2008... However, on the evidence of the last few years it is youth and excitement that England needs to bring back to the squad. Thus far, McClaren's experiments have been limited.

Micah Richard's received a call-up for a bit and looked very good before being dropped again for the aging Gary Neville; Nugent was given a brief run-out where he managed to literally rob Defoe to score on his first-team debut; and Lennon has been repeatedly chucked in on the left-wing (despite his complete lack of a left-foot... but then again, he can't cross from the right either so little difference). A few other players have played a game before being booted out (the likes of Stuart "Damn-average" Downing, SWP (Surely Won't Play) and Joey "Bash-his-face-in" Barton). Indeed, big Steve's team has remained exactly the same as Big Sven's bar the (possibly ill-advised) dropping of Beckham, which he is now having second thoughts about.

However, Bentley's performance tonight was sublime. Although he started slowly... taking a while to find his place in an unfamiliar team, once he got going he was stunning. Against a surprisingly strong Albanian team bents showed his stunning ability to make the perfect cross time after time.

Furthermore, it would seem that McClaren recognised Bentley's effort and his substitution on 70 minutes suggests, not that he wanted to see someone else... but that he had seen enough and dare I tempt fate, that he wanted to save his energy for the upcoming friendly with Brazil!!?!

The only player that made a case for their inclusion in the squad proper included, surprisingly Stuart Downing who scored two well-taken goals, the second of which was especially fine… delightfully chipped over the goalkeeper (pro evo style!)

All in all it was an excellent game to watch and again made me proud to support Rovers, with the sky commentators heaping the praise on bents throughout the game!

Except to see an A team start very soon.... watch this space!

Quality stuff Bents4eng, top work!

Let's just hope that Bents was taken off because Stevie Mac had seen enough and will be calling him up for the seniors tomorrow!

Haven't seen the highlights yet but it all suggests that he played very well and has done enough to AT LEAST make the senior squad tomorrow. If he doesn't, we all know why he was subbed then don't we, as he was validating the calls for him to be called up and was embarrassing Maclaren. I hope its the former, but the latter would not surprise me in the slightest.

I feel very strongly that Bentley did enough.. we've been severely disappointed in the past, but I really think it's time for a rover's player to break into the England side. Bents took every free-kick and corner in the match, shooing away the likes of Nicky Shorey and Downing who both take kicks for their sides and even more encouragingly he didn't let down on any of them. Genuinely I've never heard a sky OR bbc commentator be more positive about a rovers player!!
Bents4eng
Get in there my son! From what I've heard to me it also sounds like he should have done enough, if he has or not is another matter?!?! He really SHOULD be in the squad but it looks increasingly more likely that golden balls Beckham is going to be recalled. This is something I've been calling for but with Stevie Mac now desperate for something I get this feeling he may overlook Bents as he goes for "experience" yet again over "quality" (Becks is still that though!) and a player at the top of his game as Bents is. However, when you look at who else will rivial Bents there are not too many, if any are there so there could be room enough for both TWO D.B's?!?!
Hughes Da Man
McClaren... I actually dare you, I dare you NOT to pick him. He was the best player on the pitch by a mile and if that squad list turns out and he is not there...

Sounds like bents sure showed them how good he is, did derbyshire or warnock get a run?

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! he is in... finally. finally. finally.
MikeyGamst
hurrah! Although It does look like becks might start over bents.. but I def can't see him managing all of both games! Also cannot believe kiron dier and jemain jenas got in.. both looked very VERY poor yesterday .. kiron in particular.. What a waste of squad players. Also congrats to Shorey who had a pretty solid game and merited a call uo too.
Bents4eng
What is it with Jenas and Dyer, do they have incriminating pictures of Maclaren or what?
BomBom
lol.. .definitely. Also forgot to mention in my writeup that Bentley won the man of the match award!
Bents4eng
also for those who didn't get to see it: highlights are probably still up http://www.footytube.com/

when you considor how bad spurs have been defencivly this year it frankly bemuses me that he picked their 3 for the cntre halfs and keeper. average average england.
EvertonMike
hey guys we dont get any coverage down here, just wondering if derbs got a run or warnock
sasman
Jenas must have incriminating evidence which can convict McClaren of GBH or something.
