Bentley to Start England B Match
It has been confirmed that Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley will start the England B game with Albania on Friday night.
England Manager Steve McClaren FINALLY gave Bentley the England call up (albeit an England B game, but they all count) he has merited all season when he called him up for the England B International (or Michael Owen run out match!) with Albania taking place at Burnley's Turf Moor tonight.
When asked what he was expecting from Bents McClaren said:
"Exactly what you see week in, week out for Blackburn."
It is just as well that Bents plays well pretty much week in week out isn't it as if he didn't McClaren wouldn't get to see him much otherwise would he… as Match of the Day usually only give us a couple of minutes at the end of the programme!
Bentley's form this season has seen widespread calls for him to be promoted from the under-21's to the senior side, and a good showing tomorrow could well see this for the summer friendly with Brazil.
McClaren says he has been impressed with Bentley's progress and was full of praise for him, and feels he will do a job if and when called upon, he added:
"He is a player who has developed under Mark Hughes at Blackburn, he's really flourished and he's come through.
"He's one of the right-sided midfield players who has a great right foot, he has got a range of passing and is a good footballer.
"I watched him in the Under 21s and he is a player who is technically very good.
"He is someone who, when the heat is on, when the pressure is on, will always want the ball and will always take the ball."
Meanwhile Benni McCarthy has been recalled by South Africa for their African Cup of Nations qualifier with Chad.
McCarthy hasn't actually made himself available and he hasn't played for his country since his latest International retirement 16-months ago, but Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has called him up anyway, along with Rovers' midfield enforcer Aaron Mokoena.
