Bentley to Start England B Match

Bentley to Start England B Match

It has been confirmed that Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley will start the England B game with Albania on Friday night.

England Manager Steve McClaren FINALLY gave Bentley the England call up (albeit an England B game, but they all count) he has merited all season when he called him up for the England B International (or Michael Owen run out match!) with Albania taking place at Burnley's Turf Moor tonight.

When asked what he was expecting from Bents McClaren said:

"Exactly what you see week in, week out for Blackburn."

It is just as well that Bents plays well pretty much week in week out isn't it as if he didn't McClaren wouldn't get to see him much otherwise would he… as Match of the Day usually only give us a couple of minutes at the end of the programme!

Bentley's form this season has seen widespread calls for him to be promoted from the under-21's to the senior side, and a good showing tomorrow could well see this for the summer friendly with Brazil.

McClaren says he has been impressed with Bentley's progress and was full of praise for him, and feels he will do a job if and when called upon, he added:

"He is a player who has developed under Mark Hughes at Blackburn, he's really flourished and he's come through.

"He's one of the right-sided midfield players who has a great right foot, he has got a range of passing and is a good footballer.

"I watched him in the Under 21s and he is a player who is technically very good.

"He is someone who, when the heat is on, when the pressure is on, will always want the ball and will always take the ball
."

Meanwhile Benni McCarthy has been recalled by South Africa for their African Cup of Nations qualifier with Chad.

McCarthy hasn't actually made himself available and he hasn't played for his country since his latest International retirement 16-months ago, but Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has called him up anyway, along with Rovers' midfield enforcer Aaron Mokoena.

Maybe I have been a little unfair... ... Stevie Mac would have seen Bents play at Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, Anfield and the Emirates Stadium and probably White Hart Lane and the Riverside too, so he wouldn't have just made do with Match of the Day lol!

This game takes Bents a step closer to full England recognition, a good showing and he will SURELY have to be in the squad for the game with Brazil! As for Benni HOW many times has he retired and then come out of retirement for South Africa?!?! Will he answer the call this time?

Does anyone else look at the team sheet for tonight and wonder whether Stephen Warnock should be in there somewhere?!?!

I just hope (if benny is with us next year) that he isn't tempted by the african cup of nations.. (or if he leaves us.. he plays theres and gets injured!)

I am the only one who wonders how the hell there are so many (average) spurs players in the B squad. Why are both centre backs tottenham players.. They've barely kept a clean sheet all season.. think they even set a record. Another instance of Spurs's defence being overrated.. king and dawson aren't england quality A or B (though Dawson's had a fairly good season).. Also drop jenas, he's a nob!

MikeyGamst - As soon as this squad was a announced I was VERY surprised that Stevie W didn't get a lookin, Stevie Mac had to bow to public demand for Bents, but failed to noticed Stevie W, opting for PHIL NEVILLE! instead, clearly the Match of the Day highlights don't feature Stevie W as much as they should for Stevie Mac to take notice!

Bents4eng - Jenas is one of the most overrated players about, god only knows HOW he keeps getting selected for the senior side let alone the B team, thankfully he hardly ever plays for us (England) which is a bonus!!! These Spurs players get in because they play for Spurs, Stevie Mac ONLY ever goes to the grounds of the big four, and then Spurs, sometimes Everton and of course his old stomping ground, the hotbed of England talent the Riverside!
