Worst Performance of the Season

With YOUR help Vital Blackburn has been trying to determine what have been the best and worst of the Blackburn Rovers 2006-2007 season.

The nominations are still be taken for other Awards, but the Vital Blackburn Awards for 2006-2007 continue to be dished out with the

Worst Rovers Performance of the Season

When asked to simply leave the name of the opponent against whom you feel Rovers give their Worst Performance of the Season most felt…

The points dropped against the bottom sides should be the Award Winner! So congratulations I guess go to Watford, Charlton Athletic, Sheffield United, West Ham United and Fulham!

So this didn't actually come down to an individual performance, is proved performances! More often than not we failed to perform against the sides in the lower reaches, in particular away from home. Ultimately these lost points against these sides, all of who took their fair share of points from us (some more than others!) cost us an EASY automatic UEFA Cup spot.

The actual stand alone performance that got the most mentions (bar this collective Championship relegated trio and friends!) proved to be our opening game of the season mauling. We travelled to Portsmouth and got well and truly slaughtered, luckily just coming away with a 3-0 defeat! We started as though we believed our own hype, as if our sixth place finish from the season before could easily be replicated with little, or no effort. How wrong the players were that day and NEVER made that mistake again, not that I'm saying we didn't play bad again, as we did, just not that bad…

So there we have it a collective set of games against relegated sides, and sides threatened with relegation are seen as our worst showings of the season, and you can understand why people feel this. This, what 12 points or so most often than not simply thrown away (with respect to these sides!) cost us an automatic UEFA Cup place and COULD have seen us challenging again for a Champions League place as we had in 2005-2006. Obviously all teams lose points they shouldn't but this seems to be a real stumbling block, and something we need to address.

I personally went for the 3-0 thumping we took against Portsmouth, how bad were Rovers that day! How we only lost 3-0 I still don't know. Sparky had a few choice words with everyone, certain individuals in particular and it didn't get that bad again really did it. Some set the standard for their season, and we all know what happened to them on the whole after, and what will happen to them this summer! We did to Portsmouth at Ewood Park though what they did to us didn't we and SHOULD have won more than 3-0 ourselves!

1-0 away at charlton was my pick but there were a few lows in and amongst the highs.

That game was TERRIBLE wasn't it Mikey. I hadn't even contemplated taking a point from that game before it kicked off, but as it went on it was ALL I could see us getting then we lost that in the dying seconds!

Before reading your article i would have said the first game of the season... so I am agreeing with you!
Ex Ewood Resident
You should have had your say Ex Ewood then that gmae would have been the winner :) Nevermind, hopefully if you can find the time you'll be able to (assuming you even want to?!?!) vote on others while you can?

Portsmouth is still my pick what a shocking start to the season

I wonder how different things would have been if we'd started the season well, rather than THINKING we would as we appeared to in that game?!?!
Hughes Da Man
We need to start well next year to stand a chance of keeping pace. If we had got to X-Mas in the top half of the table we would of finished 5th/6th...

This is why I think our early start with the Intertoto Cup WILL be great for us! We often take ages to get going but with some "competitive games" behind us before the season even gets going maybe for once we'll make a good start?!?! The early Intertoto Cup isn't a bad thing at all for me, as it's not like it used to be where you had to play a ton of matches so you were burnt out by Christmas, it "should" work in our favour!
Hughes Da Man
I hope so.. also having more consistency in our defense from the start to the end of the season.. only one of defenders that started the season ended the season still playing, and he was a midfielder!
Bents4eng
We'll be luckier with injuries next season, have a few new arrivals, have ALL the ingredients required for success!
