McCarthy's Options Cut

McCarthy's Options Cut

Although nothing is concrete as it is only speculation, in of all places the Sun, the chances of Benni McCarthy leaving Blackburn Rovers this summer have reduced… well in as much as it probably won't be to Chelsea anyway, as he would have apparently wanted?

It just goes to show how high expectations are at Chelsea that after winning back to back Premiership Titles and a League Cup, that by merely winning the League and FA Cup's this season, it is allegedly being viewed as a "disappointment" by those behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge, and is something Alan Hansen was VERY vocal on after Saturday's FA Cup Final! This is a matter for Chelsea fans to debate but surely it isn't that bad is it, Premiership runners up and Champions League Semi-Finalists meant they were fractions away from a clean sweep!

With it being such a "disappointing season" the Sun (it's true because they say so lol!) say that because they feel they have enough quality at the club already no big money transfers will take place, only small amounts will be paid out with Bosman free transfers also being used, so this has seen McCarthy's hopes of a move to Chelsea ruled out? The £8 million apparent asking fee (he's worth more that that anyway, surely!) is above the budget so we are safe… from Chelsea's clutches?!?!

Another striker that will be going nowhere, for the time being at least is Francis Jeffers. Ipswich Town are keen to take Jeffers to Portman Road on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell, but with Rovers holding out for £1 million the reported £350,000 offered was flatly rejected.

Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams told the Lancashire Telegraph:

"We have had an offer from Ipswich and Francis is keen to go there, but it's not at a level we deem to be acceptable at the moment.

"We have said that we are prepared to let Francis go, but they (Ipswich) will have to meet our valuation of him

Meanwhile Tottenham Hotspurs' apparent domination on the game will begin (or is this continue? I'm only joking Spurs fans!) with moves for five or six quality footballers over the summer including Rovers' own Morten Gamst Pedersen. We've been here before haven't we?

If Chelsea are reluctant to pay £8 million for Benni then it is unlikely they will pay AT LEAST the £10 million MINIMUM we should be looking for, so fingers crossed here that Benni will not be able to join up with Mourinho again. You can see why we are holding out for £1 million for Franny but will be really get this?!?!, £750,000 maybe £500,000 will get him don't you think? Not even going to comment on the MGP to Spurs link (other than this comment to say I won't lol!)

Have to say that Benny McCarthy is one cheeky get.Hope you Rovers fans boo him next season.Spurs are a pack of losers, their after everyone and will sign no players from any prem clubs other than cast offs. They really do believe their bigger than everyone around them, bless.

lol Pking! Whilst I can see what you are saying about booing him, and I'm sure some people would (stay or go) it isn't something that I do, or would do. I'm FAR from happy by what he is meant to be saying and I've not been afraid to say so, but wouldn't boo him personally and don't like clubs booing their own players but each to their own, and after all we pay our money (and a percentage of their's!) so you can't argue with an opinion can you?!?!

We DON'T need to let him (Benni) go do we, so why should we?!?! I've said this probably a hundred times but Lucas Neill is an example to follow (not his leaving!) in as much as he stayed professional on the pitch, if Benni can do that then let him stay even if he wants to go, but if he is so desperate to go that he'll "rock the boat" we are better of offloading him. Agree with what you say as regards to MGP and most of us here have said this since last summer.

In some ways I wish we could let him rot in the reserves. We have saved his career from the bench at Porto and he repays us like this. Just so he can sit on the bench at Chelsea.

McCarthy is quality and would fit in at Chelsea under Mourinho. However, I said it at the time this rumour surfaced and I'll repeat it now: Chelsea are looking to buy a striker as a replacement for Drogba / Kalou when they go on African Nations duty. As McCarthy is African also, I can't see the benefit they would get out of it.

I don't actually know what the score is with Benni and South Africa to be honest, he retires and backtracks so many times I'm not sure if he is a "current" International player or not?!?! If not then he's exactly what Chelsea would want as cover, but you couldn't even rule out him coming out of retirement again even if he is now! But the board won't let you buy anyway will they andleics will they???

I think Chelsea see Benni as a cheap striker who has proven that he can score a lot of goals in the Premiership, now I see this as an insult to Rovers as Chelsea who in the past have paid somewhere near 3/4 times too much for players that no-one had ever heard of or who had one decent season somewhere else, they may have changed their transfer policy but if they want Benni and a goal scorer then they will have to pay big!! Just because it Rovers and we are seen as a small club why should we settle for pittance for an obviously very good player, if this transfer was happening between say Chelsea and teams like Utd, Barca, Real etc i'd be very surprised if Benni would be valued at £8m, maybe add £10m to that figure instead
24/05/2007 09:48:00
Its funny how things work in the Premiership, strikers who are primarily rated on goals are valued as such... Berbatov 23 goals = 30 million and Benni who has scored 25 goals = 10 million?!?!?! INSANE!
