Oh it is on for Rovers!

Oh it is on for Rovers!

The battle for UEFA Cup places were decided on Sunday afternoon, Blackburn Rovers were out of the automatic places but an Intertoto Cup place was on… and we got it!

The 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Thursday put paid to our chances of automatic qualification for next seasons UEFA Cup but after another incredible afternoon we secured our place, albeit starting our campaign much earlier than others with a two-legged tie in late July against either Llanelli, FK Vetra of Lithuania or a Polish team.

As I was unable to follow the Rovers match today by any means (when I say this I mean be at the game or follow the game, and just our game) I decided to avoid t'internet, radio and television like the plague until Match of the Day was on to see how we faired.

We are used to being on last, or near last on Match of the Day (we were on a little earlier tonight thought!) but today's wait was particularly tortuous! Firstly I had to sit through the relegation issues, then the Everton vs. Chelsea and Spurs (WHY didn't Jermain Defoe blaze over against us!) vs. Manchester City games which had no impact on what happened to us.

Next up Bolton vs. Aston Villa, a 2-2 draw (what a goal from Anthony Gardner for Villa!) didn't feel me with much optimism. FINALLY came our game. Most of us knew there would be goals, and the 3-3 draw meant it didn't finish far off my 5-3 prediction did it! Had we done enough? I thought not but Portsmouth's 0-0 draw with Arsenal meant WE HAD DONE IT! The Eight hours or so of avoiding ANYTHING that could have revealed our fate was worth it, but I wouldn't want to do this again!

So another highly compelling and entertaining season has come to an end with European football VERY much possible again for Rovers next season!

Before I finish I would like to give congratulations to Wigan Athletic and West Ham United (as much as I still feel they should have been docked points, their seven wins in nine matches was Title winning form!) for avoiding relegation, but would also like to send my commiserations to Sheffield United who filled the final relegation place after their defeat to Wigan and West Ham's victory over Manchester United.

It would have been FAR easier for me to have just watched one of the other games on sky or listened to the radio wouldn't it, but for some reason I wanted to do it this way when it was clear I couldn't watch our match. I can't believe we've made it into the Intertoto Cup, I didn't expect Reading to beat us nor did I think Bolton would win but was certain Portsmouth would beat Arsenal but again they failed! You have to feel for Reading and Portsmouth as after all they did finish above us, but if they decided not to apply for the Intertoto Cup that is their fault and not ours. So guys we're off to Wales, Lithuania or Poland, I'd like to make one of these places, but would have to concede that Wales would be the most realistic.

As for the relegation I REALLY feel for Sheffield United, as I would have Wigan as the Hammered stayed up as I still feel they got off lightly with "only" a £5.5 million fine. However, as I say their recent form has been outstanding so for their on the field antics they've deserved it, although you could argue the man that shouldn't have been on it has been the key behind it!

I stopped doubting you that both of these sides hadn't applied sometime ago mate, still surprised at least Portsmouth didn't, but hey Rovers benefit as a result don't they. We'll see you in Europe next season Mike as well as the Premiership, maybe our paths will cross during the tournament?!?!

I'm not sure on the rules like in the CL how far in the thing you go before you can draw a side from the same country, i'm not counting my chickens yet after our last attempt that we will even reach the group stages. in a way you are lucky you only have to wait till july for football, i have to till august. you will probably play polish oposition out of the 3, the team which finishes 4th, and lets be honest even the team that finishes 1st ain't great.

True but you don't get any mugs these days do you! I think the groups are the MINIMUM we should both be aiming for. An all Enlgish final with us two would do me, especially as we know we can spank you guys 4-1 in Cup competitions LOL :) just kidding.

not to be pedantic HDM but wasnt it a 1-1 draw with spurs rather than 0-0 draw? or was i jumping around my living room on 20 minutes and kicking the cat at 70 minutes for nothing :)
