'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Oh it is on for Rovers!

The battle for UEFA Cup places were decided on Sunday afternoon, Blackburn Rovers were out of the automatic places but an Intertoto Cup place was on… and we got it!

The 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Thursday put paid to our chances of automatic qualification for next seasons UEFA Cup but after another incredible afternoon we secured our place, albeit starting our campaign much earlier than others with a two-legged tie in late July against either Llanelli, FK Vetra of Lithuania or a Polish team.

As I was unable to follow the Rovers match today by any means (when I say this I mean be at the game or follow the game, and just our game) I decided to avoid t'internet, radio and television like the plague until Match of the Day was on to see how we faired.

We are used to being on last, or near last on Match of the Day (we were on a little earlier tonight thought!) but today's wait was particularly tortuous! Firstly I had to sit through the relegation issues, then the Everton vs. Chelsea and Spurs (WHY didn't Jermain Defoe blaze over against us!) vs. Manchester City games which had no impact on what happened to us.

Next up Bolton vs. Aston Villa, a 2-2 draw (what a goal from Anthony Gardner for Villa!) didn't feel me with much optimism. FINALLY came our game. Most of us knew there would be goals, and the 3-3 draw meant it didn't finish far off my 5-3 prediction did it! Had we done enough? I thought not but Portsmouth's 0-0 draw with Arsenal meant WE HAD DONE IT! The Eight hours or so of avoiding ANYTHING that could have revealed our fate was worth it, but I wouldn't want to do this again!

So another highly compelling and entertaining season has come to an end with European football VERY much possible again for Rovers next season!

Before I finish I would like to give congratulations to Wigan Athletic and West Ham United (as much as I still feel they should have been docked points, their seven wins in nine matches was Title winning form!) for avoiding relegation, but would also like to send my commiserations to Sheffield United who filled the final relegation place after their defeat to Wigan and West Ham's victory over Manchester United.

It would have been FAR easier for me to have just watched one of the other games on sky or listened to the radio wouldn't it, but for some reason I wanted to do it this way when it was clear I couldn't watch our match. I can't believe we've made it into the Intertoto Cup, I didn't expect Reading to beat us nor did I think Bolton would win but was certain Portsmouth would beat Arsenal but again they failed! You have to feel for Reading and Portsmouth as after all they did finish above us, but if they decided not to apply for the Intertoto Cup that is their fault and not ours. So guys we're off to Wales, Lithuania or Poland, I'd like to make one of these places, but would have to concede that Wales would be the most realistic.

As for the relegation I REALLY feel for Sheffield United, as I would have Wigan as the Hammered stayed up as I still feel they got off lightly with "only" a £5.5 million fine. However, as I say their recent form has been outstanding so for their on the field antics they've deserved it, although you could argue the man that shouldn't have been on it has been the key behind it!
Hughes Da Man
Still doubting me when i told you reading and pompey hadn't applied so you only had to finish above newcastle? ;)
EvertonMike
I stopped doubting you that both of these sides hadn't applied sometime ago mate, still surprised at least Portsmouth didn't, but hey Rovers benefit as a result don't they. We'll see you in Europe next season Mike as well as the Premiership, maybe our paths will cross during the tournament?!?!
Hughes Da Man
I'm not sure on the rules like in the CL how far in the thing you go before you can draw a side from the same country, i'm not counting my chickens yet after our last attempt that we will even reach the group stages. in a way you are lucky you only have to wait till july for football, i have to till august. you will probably play polish oposition out of the 3, the team which finishes 4th, and lets be honest even the team that finishes 1st ain't great.
EvertonMike
True but you don't get any mugs these days do you! I think the groups are the MINIMUM we should both be aiming for. An all Enlgish final with us two would do me, especially as we know we can spank you guys 4-1 in Cup competitions LOL :) just kidding.
Hughes Da Man
have you heard yet that the final is at the COMS even if we do get there, better book the plane tickets now ;). that cup game you speak fondly about was the low point of an on the whole good season for us....spurs will be in with a major shout, as will sevilla and werder bremen again, bayern munich are in it this year too would love to draw them! good luck for next season (we may both need it)!
EvertonMike
I tell you Mike after this season we are due A LOT of luck, so hopefully wee get it, although we got a fair bit making the Intertoto Cup I guess?!?! Yeah I'd heard that Mike, not fare to go would it. There will be A LOT of good teams in it but we'll be good teams also!
Hughes Da Man
They still have plenty of time to apply guys so lets not get ahead of ourselves, im sure portsmouth might have a second think about it
sasman
not to be pedantic HDM but wasnt it a 1-1 draw with spurs rather than 0-0 draw? or was i jumping around my living room on 20 minutes and kicking the cat at 70 minutes for nothing :)
AustRover
sasman - I hear you and was under the impression that they still had time to enter but they aren't making any noises to that effect, I think we can celebrate safe in the knowledge we'll be off to Wales, Lithuania or Poland. Oh, and duly noted and changed AustRover, you passed the test to see if the articles are actually being read :) LOL.

It is dead in my building today. They are all gutted. I on the other hand am buzzing after a great game yesterday and a lap of honour that was thoroughly deserved. How much does Robbie's girl look like a mini Robbie!??!?! I know thats stating the obvious but she is literally the spit of him.
MikeyGamst
I can imagine it is dead in there mate, I was going to say I can't imagine how they must feel but we do don't we! They (Sheffield United) were unlucky to go down, but on the other hand they were a good 10 points clear a few weeks back so should have stayed up really, did they relax too soon?!?! They'll be back. Is she Robbie in disguise, is she Robbbbiiie in disguise!
Hughes Da Man
Intertoto Cup hey....??He he he............Dont say i didnt tell you so..........Bye Bye Benni...!!LMAO
chalky76
No chalky you said we wouldn't finish in the top half of the table, think you'll find we did, so why don't you sod off back to Vital Spurs as you aren't needed, nor wanted on here until we meet again next season!
Hughes Da Man
Congrats on reaching europe all be it through that tournement first lol ..... I think you will do ok ... You need to keep hold of benni though !!!
dazednconfuzed
Tell me about it mate! We will... ... I hope!
