Greatest Ever Squad: Forwards

For sometime now we've been trying to put together what we feel is the Greatest Ever Blackburn Rovers Squad. This has been selected but now is time for a recap and in some cases a re-evaluation.

This recap will entail us going through the positions, looking at those already selected and deciding are "they really worthy of their place in the Greatest Ever Rovers Squad?

This squad comprises of:

3 Goalkeepers

2 Left-backs (or Wing-backs)
4 Centre-backs
2 Right-backs (or Wing-backs)

2 Left-midfielders (or Wingers)
4 Central Midfielders
2 Right-midfielders (or Wingers)

4 Forwards

When we looked at the forwards first time round, these six men were the men with the most mentions, and hence they made the poll.

Tommy Briggs
Simon Garner
Mike Newell
David Speedie
Alan Shearer
Chris Sutton

From these six the following four were selected.

Tommy Briggs (11%),
Simon Garner (16%),
Alan Shearer (55%) &
Chris Sutton (9%)

So what do we do next?
Next we will go over the positional selections and once we have these positional placing selected to a level the majority agree on (not all will, but the majority will speak and be heard… hopefully!) we will start selecting the Greatest XI!

How do we review this?
Quite simple, YOU look at the people who have been brought into the squad, if you are not happy you mention the name in the comments section below for the name you think should come out and put forward the name (PLEASE NOTE - This doesn't have to come from the original six mentioned!) you thought should come in (ideally why in both instances!)

From the names put forward to come in, and those to go out we should have a majority voicing their fair and honest opinion more fairly than a poll for this process. In a poll you just select a name, in some cases maybe that you like, by asking you to comment you mention a name with a reason why!

What happens if no one comments?
Quite simply if no one comments then no one comes in or out of the Squad and we'll select a keeper for the Greatest XI from what we already have.

I DO NOT want this re-selection process to go to a vote, I want this process decided by the majority through your comments. People have no excuse to moan or be unhappy about who is and who isn't in if they will not debate (not argue!) their point. In a split decision we will, well we will cross that bridge if and when it comes to it!

It's a lot simpler than it may seem!
So simply leave the name(s) below for who you think should go out and add the name for the player that you think should come in, all ideally with reasons. This doesn't need to be fully detailed but some reasoning would help.

Things can and will change over time
Do remember the squad can and will be changed over time at your request. This is a long running process as hopefully I will be around this site for YEARS to come, as will you?

Once we have decided (to the majority, not minority I'm afraid) we will have a finalised squad and then select a Greatest XI (this will go to a vote though!) I will reveal how the "appeals" process for change will happen once we fully finish this project.

So what are you waiting for…
You know what to do, have your say below. This re-evaluation process will run for a maximum of a week, this should give people plenty of time to have their say. If you don't the true Greats (again I'm not saying those already selected aren't, I'm not looking to sway opinion within this article, will do this below LOL!) could miss out, then who will be to blame? Without wanting to be harsh you, the Vital Blackburn members will as you would not have voiced your opinion…

Others that gained mentions last time but failed to make the vote were: Craig Bellamy, Andy Cole, Matt Derbyshire, Paul Dickov, Paul Gallagher, Ted Harper, Matt Jansen, Benni McCarthy, Andy McEvoy, Egil Ostenstad, Roy Vernon, Ashley Ward & Roy Wegerle. Some MUST have been in jest?!?!
Hughes Da Man
I need a little thought (not much but a little) on this. Alan Shearer is a gimme, along with Simon Garner really. Tommy Briggs, Ted Harper, Matt Jansen, Andy McEvoy, Roy Vernon and for me maybe even Roy Wegerle (a real class act in my opinion) and others all require serious consideration, some more than others obviously. For now ALAN SHEARER & SIMON GARNER are two definite choices for me, more to follow!
Hughes Da Man
Ashley Ward!!! Must have been a Derby fan still laughing at us paying £4M for him. Right up there with the £7M for Davies!!!! Egil was just as bad. Shearer is a cert and I suppose for time served and goals it has to be Garner.
Wellsy
Some shockers weren't there Wellsy! In fairness at the time even some mentions were only in jest (and they said so!) Have you got another two you want selected alonsgside Shearer and Garner Wellsy, or like me are you unsure at the mo?
Hughes Da Man
I'd go with Matt Jansen for helping us back to the Prem - I also like the guy and Andy Cole for the winner in the Worthy cup.
Wellsy
Jansen is still one of my favourties (not that I'm saying he is one of my selections, but I'm not ruling it out either!). Fair call on your reasoning for Cole, but hopefully others get more mentions as the thought of him being lablelled one of our greatest ever (with respect to him and you Wellsy) isn't something I am overly keen on.
Hughes Da Man
Shearer and Garner are givens, I still feel that McAvoy deserves to be in there and Briggs also, therefore Sutton out (for now at least and Andy McAvoy in for me
BomBom
That is the thinking Im tending to follow BomBom.
Hughes Da Man
Right I've decided I'll add Andy McAvoy and Tommy Briggs to Alan Shearer and Simon Garner, so my selections BRIGGS, GARNER, McAVOY & SHEARER.
Hughes Da Man
Let's get MORE views shared on this issue though people!
Hughes Da Man
I'll go with Shearer, Garner, Briggs and Sutton. I wasnt to happy with the way Sutton left but I feel he served the club well in his time. His partnership with Shearer was awesome in its day
Clint
Thanks for that Clint. The Sutton and Shearer partnership was probably one of the nest I've ever seen, Rovers or otherwise. Sutton is arguably very much worthy of a part of this squad (and may well still get in?) but if not this time it could change down the line?!?!
Hughes Da Man
I;m thinkin surely Bellamy should of gotten a chance but that aint my call. Shearer was a bit of gimme... I would of voted for Sutton but as HD always says... MAJORITY RULES.
MikeyGamst
To be honest Mikey from the looks of things Sutton isn't far off the reckoning you know, I've not looked at mentions too much but Id say Sutton is pretty much level, or thereabouts. I'll give it a couple more days then a decision will be made, in the event of a split decision it will be the strength iof argument but could be the player orginally in which would be Sutton. Anyway a few days to go SO MAKE YOUR SUGGESTION COUNT PEOPLE!
Hughes Da Man
Shearer, Briggs and Garner are the gimme's for me. All outstanding for us, and key contributors to our history. Sutton, well i've made my view clear previously and he simply couldn't buy my vote - In my opinion Newell has to get the other place. For all the damage that SAS did, the Newell Shearer partnership completely changed the way we played, and forced the rest of the squad in a different direction, resulting in the squad that, er, did quite well really. (Failing that, any chance we can shove Ian Pearce in there as a striker - He won a championship medal you know ;-) )
Head Rover Heels
Fair play to you Head Rover Heels, you have the opinion and back it up. Newell is a Rovers great, but don't think he'll be making this selection (just yet, this could obviously change both now, or at a latter date!) Ian Pearce is one of the first names in reserve :)
Hughes Da Man
The names I personally would put forward are Shearer, Garner, Sutton and Bellamy.
MikeyGamst
Right guys I'll give it a day or two more then our squad is finalised! Then over the summer we'll select the starting XI (via polls I'm afraid, just hoping they are voted on fairly?!?!)
Hughes Da Man
HRH, with regard to the championship medal, so did Tony Gale but i wouldn't fancy him up front either!!! Before you say it, i know pearce was a striker when he signed from Chelsea :p
