Bentley FINALLY Given England Call

Bentley FINALLY Given England Call

England manager Steve McClaren has finally called David Bentley (and others!) up to an England squad, albeit an England B squad for the upcoming friendly with Albania.

The friendly, which takes place on May 25th, is at, of ALL places Burnley's Turf Moor. What a place for Bentley to make his "senior" England bow!

After being overlooked repeatedly when others (not just Rovers fans!) had been backing him to be given this chance Bentley, along with Joleon Lescott (Everton), Nicky Shorey (Reading) and Phil Jagielka (Sheffield United) have been called into an England squad for the first time.

David Nugent retains his place in the set-up after a goalscoring debut for the A team (I pity the fool! Oh, not Mr T's A Team…) and Michael Owen returns but others however have still been overlooked in a squad that contains MANY regular faces with the likes of Matthew Taylor, Leighton Baines and Kevin Nolan again left out, although some, maybe all may be injured or returning from injury?

Here is the Squad:

Goalkeepers: Paul Robinson (Tottenham), Ben Foster (Manchester United, on loan at Watford)

Defenders: Phil Neville (Everton), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Michael Dawson (Tottenham), Ledley King (Tottenham), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Nicky Shorey (Reading)

Midfielders: Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Phil Jagielka (Sheffield United), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Kieron Dyer (Newcastle), Scott Parker (Newcastle), Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), David Bentley (Blackburn)

Forwards: Michael Owen (Newcastle), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Alan Smith (Manchester United), David Nugent (Preston)

Maybe Stephen Warnock will feel he had a shot at this squad, but you can't argue with Phil Neville's inclusion, what a colossus he is… but alas we can't be greedy, as at least Bents has FINALLY been given that call he's been waiting for all season.

Doesn't REALLY look much like a "B" team though does it?!?! Am I not the only one who thinks that maybe there are other players, the likes of Kevin Nolan, Matthew Taylor, Leighton Baines, Tom Huddlestone, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Kevin Davies, Gary O'Neil dare I even say Stevie Warnock and Matt Derbyshire etc. etc. that would have been more suited to a "B" International?!?!

well done that man , think he is a class player and at the minute he would make my full england squad not just a B Squad !

I must say being a Spurs fan how impressed I was with Blackburn yesterday, you we're very direct, i thought your wingers crossing was exceptional. Fair play and good luck for the future, hope the dirty bigboys dont take your best players, its getting silly

dazednconfuzed - Don't think you'll find many (without doubt here on Vital Blackburn) that would disagree with you, if he gets a game here (which surely he will) then a performance would HAVE to see him make the squad for the Barzil game, and the qualifier that follows?!?!

Boony - Thanks for that, we were by no means anywhere near our best but the tactics and game plan were primarily spot on. Didn't really have much answer after Spurs equalised, but maybe this was due to the feeling so much the game plan would work? All we (Rovers) can do is hope players would rather stay and continue moving this club forward as opposed to sitting on the bench a lot of the time with the big four (which most would do) moves to any other clubs will not be a move forward too much in terms of what they can offer that I really feel we can.

If Bents does want to make an impression, he'll have to play better than he did last night. I thought he gave the ball away far to many times and for once his crossing wasn't up to it's usual stds. I thought Morten was better though...his cross for Beni's goal and Samba's header were different class. Now that Bent's has finally got an England call, we need to focus our attention on getting Warnock into the England team - he's better than Neville!!!

Wellsy - Totally agree on your thoughts on MGP's and Bents' games the other day. Everyone has a bad day don't they, unfortunately for us (but fortunately for Spurs!) Bents had one of his. With all due respect to Albania Bents should be able to put in a show, if he gets the chance. For a "B" game surely Warnock would have been a better option, FFS Stevie Mac you know what Neville CAN'T do for the senior side so why didn't you give more newbies chances?!?!

MikeyGamst - Our banging our heads against the brick wall hasn't been quite as pointless as it may have seemed has it. Come on Bents it's time to shine, do enough so he CAN'T overlook you again.
