Rovers Defensive Praise from Hughes

Rovers Defensive Praise from Hughes

Goals from strike due Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts saw Blackburn Rovers to a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday but the defensive pairing at the heart of the back four have earned Mark Hughes' praise.

In truth Rovers were comfortable for the most part of the match against a poor Newcastle side devoid of ideas and seemingly happy to get this season out of the way, but nevertheless what the £30 million strike partnership of Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen threw at Rovers central defensive partnership of Ryan Nelsen and Christopher Samba was dealt with, and dealt with well.

Speaking on the official Blackburn Rovers website Hughes said:

"We were excellent, I thought the guys at the back were rock-solid.

"Chrissy Samba and Ryan Nelsen dealt just with everything they had to and when they saw the opportunity to break out themselves they did that as well.

"We had a great platform in which to counter-attack and win the game
."

Hughes didn't forget his strikers though, and had praise for McCarthy, who soldiered on with a back injury after notching his 22nd of the season.

"He's done excellent," added Hughes.

"In fairness he was struggling at half-time, he got a real bang on his back and I was going to make a change at half-time but he wasn't prepared to come off.

"He wanted to give it a go and he lasted a good twenty-odd minutes after that so I think that shows how keen he is to work hard for the team and be a team player
."

The Admiral and the Wall have been EXCELLENT together, what a partnership they have formed. The Wall's goal line clearance from Owen was superb, at first I thought he hit the bar. It wasn't until I saw a replay that he had in fact hit the Wall!!! Hat's off to Benni also, 22 goals in his first season in England, not bad is it! Only behind Drogba and Ronaldo in the Premiership too.

The Wall is getting most credit but the Admiral SHOULDN'T be forgotten should he, but I guess he could be starting to fall into the Brad Friedel mould "he's so good we just come to expect greatness from him ALL the time!"

I really hope so lol. How bout McCarthy coming out today in your press and comparing his combanation with roberts to yorke and cole. I really hope this is a sign of his ambition to stay with the club. With a bit of luck we are in Europe next year and im sure with a fully fit Roberts paired with McCarthy we can push the limits. Derbyshire is definitly going to save us 5 million pounds by not having to buy a back up striker, im sure he can do the job, maybe save the forward money, invest it in a midfielder

Roberts is the key to Benni staying.. he once described Jay as his "second wife". Nelsen has already fallen into the Brad mode, he is just superb but it is now well and truly expected.

Yorke and Cole were dynamite at Manure weren't they, JR and Benni have the potential of a GREAT partnerhship in a similar mould. Well JR isn't going anywhere is he, so you would think this makes Benni safe?!?!
