Blackburn Rovers Strikers

r.waterfall shares his views on the Blackburn Rovers strikers, and why Matt Derbyshire should be given a run as a first choice striker.

The Charlton Athletic match score yesterday flattered Rovers, until Derbyshire came on. He showed McCarthy and Roberts what they should have been doing to beat a 10 man relegation team.

If you weren't there, let me explain that the newspaper headlines, about Rovers giving Charlton a drubbing, don't tell the whole story. Rovers first two goals were due to terrible goalkeeping errors. With even a half decent goalkeeper and if Derbyshire had not come on, the result could have easily been 1-1. (With Charlton hitting the crossbar with a strong shot it could even have been 1-2) Of course Rovers deserved to win but then they did last week - and lost!

So many times when in a shooting position forwards passed and the opportunity was gone, the one time when McCarthy should have left the wingers centre for the unmarked Roberts, he tried the spectacular overhead kick which failed.

Derbyshire came on and showed them how easy it should have been for them, against such a weak defence, to get goals. I am sure that if Derbyshire had started it really would have been a drubbing of 5 or even 6-1. I can't help but see him having got a hat trick over 90 minuets.

Why do we underrate him? Is it because he is a homegrown talent? He should be given a run as first choice striker. Our goal difference would not be a minus with him as a main striker.

It wasn't the drubbing the scoreline appears to suggest and Charlton maybe could have had more, but we SHOULD have had more also so I can see where r.waterfall is coming from, but at the same time a win is a win isn't it and goals are goals no matter how they come?!?! As for Derbs, I'm not sure too many do underestimate him do they? I know I don't as most will testify due to my constant banging on about him! Lets face it can we really see Sparky leaving out Benni in place of Derbs?!?! I think JR will work well with both, and Derbs could work with Benni but JR proves that perfect foil for most strikers. But I do still feel that JR is the better partner for Benni at the moment.

He's a great guy to have around Matty because he doesnt sulk when not picked, he gives it his all and always looks to make an impact when he does get on. There are not enough footballers like him.

He's appreciates what he's got doesn't he, he knows he could EASILY not have. Playing for YOUR club makes you see things clearer doesn't it.

Definitely.... he is a joy to have and he really doesnt want to be anywhere other than where he is right now. For Rovers fans that means so much.
