r.waterfall shares his views on the Blackburn Rovers strikers, and why Matt Derbyshire should be given a run as a first choice striker.
The Charlton Athletic match score yesterday flattered Rovers, until Derbyshire came on. He showed McCarthy and Roberts what they should have been doing to beat a 10 man relegation team.
If you weren't there, let me explain that the newspaper headlines, about Rovers giving Charlton a drubbing, don't tell the whole story. Rovers first two goals were due to terrible goalkeeping errors. With even a half decent goalkeeper and if Derbyshire had not come on, the result could have easily been 1-1. (With Charlton hitting the crossbar with a strong shot it could even have been 1-2) Of course Rovers deserved to win but then they did last week - and lost!
So many times when in a shooting position forwards passed and the opportunity was gone, the one time when McCarthy should have left the wingers centre for the unmarked Roberts, he tried the spectacular overhead kick which failed.
Derbyshire came on and showed them how easy it should have been for them, against such a weak defence, to get goals. I am sure that if Derbyshire had started it really would have been a drubbing of 5 or even 6-1. I can't help but see him having got a hat trick over 90 minuets.
Why do we underrate him? Is it because he is a homegrown talent? He should be given a run as first choice striker. Our goal difference would not be a minus with him as a main striker.
