Greatest Ever Squad: Left-Midfield

Greatest Ever Squad: Left-Midfield

The Greatest Ever Blackburn Rovers Squad is taking shape. With some re-evaluation we are getting closer to a finalised squad.

For some time we've been trying to put together what we, the Vital Blackburn members see (on the whole) as the Greatest Ever Blackburn Rovers Squad.

We've previously suggested and voted on names, but we are now undergoing a re-valuation process which is looking at those that have been selected to ensure "they really are worthy of their place in the Greatest Ever Rovers Squad.

After looking at Damien Duff & Morten Gamst Pedersen, who had previously been selected, it has been decided that the final selection of the two left-midfielders should be:

Damien Duff &
Scott Sellers

So Morten Gamst Pedersen comes out with Scott Sellers coming in.

This means Damien Duff & Scott Sellers will now be the final two from which we will eventually (not yet though!) select from when we finally do compile our Greatest Ever XI. But do remember the squad can and will still change over time at your request. Once we have a finalised our 23-man squad and have then selected a Greatest XI I will reveal how the "appeals" process for change will happen.

Next up for re-evaluation are the central-midfielders . Look out for this shortly.

Vital Boxing - Bellew Wants Lebedev Next

This came down to Scott Sellers and Jason Wilcox. I know that I wanted Sellers in and voted for him but this ISN'T why he has been selected. They tied with three mentions apiece so had to be separated so how! For this I looked over the comments and one said Sellers ran Duffer a VERY close third so I used this to tip it in favour of Sellers. Again I must stress NOT because I wanted Sellers in, had comments lent more in favour of Wilcox he would have came in. Arguably Sellers isn't the right man for the squad but I can only work with the comments I am given!!! Brotherston is worthy of a place in this squad but didn't get the mentions so missed out, I still feel he would be more suited for a place on the right of midfield though?!?!

Go Scotty... a great example of how a "smaller" man should play the game.

Totally agree Mikey. I do feel that not everyone will be happy with this though, but as I say I've called this fair, I wanted Scotty but didn't use this to sway his selection.

I'd agree with that - Sellars was the dead cert for me. Space for Brotherstone on the right, so no harm done. Out of Wilcox and Sellars, there's only one winner really.

Nice one Head Rover Heels. I ALWAYS had Noel is mind for a place on the right (well I mean in mind for my own potential personal vote, wasn't really thinking of him for the left side at all really!) I still feel that the only reason Wilcox would have been picked over Sellers was because we had FAR more publicity when Wilcox played for us than we did when Sellers did, still feel Wilcox didn't do much more, if anymore for the club than Sellers, just so happens that Wilcox got the England recognition and a Premiership winners medal, so again I say (as good as he was) he was in the right place at the right time.

Couldn't agree more, but i would add that Wilcox was right player, right abilities, right place, right time ;-). I guess what i'm getting at is that Wilcox (like Ripley) wasn't exactly great shakes at being an all rounder, but he was there for a reason - He could run all day and could whip a great ball in when needed - Fitted perfectly with the team ethic. Now that could be classed as right place... but it could also be classed as horses for courses. Still, we're not creating a team to work well together here, so Sellars and Duff are totally worthy of their places.

You sum it up nicely Head Rover Heels, I'm not Anti-Wilcox by anymeans (I know it may appear I am but I'm not!)

:-D I know - Was obvious from your postings in the actual debate about who should go in. Anyway, even if you were, it's a game of opinions, and my opinion is never right or wrong, purely my opinion. Still, having said that, anyone who doesn't put Brotherstone in on the right is clearly wrong ;-)

True Head Rover Heels unless people disagree with my view, this is always right :) LOL (honestly I'm joking!) I think I made it clear Wilcox shouldn't have been in but if he was I would have said congrats to him nonetheless as the overal opinion can't be a wrong one can it (or right as you point out!) Again, agree, Noel almost 100% certainty HAS to be in this squad this opinion CAN'T be doubted.

OK question for you guys. RM, who's gonna go out for Noel to come in? Douglas? Can't see that. So Ripley out yes? This is where i disagree with this LM poll. Sellars was a cracking little player but IMO Noel more than matched him while at rovers and had a more successful career than Scotty, again IMO. Now then, Stuart Ripley was one of the best at doing what he did, get down the byline beat the defender and get a ball in for the forwards. Yes he had his goal droughts (they were kinda legendary in their own right!) but was a far far better winger than Wilcox was BUT to put Noel in and lets be fair, he more than deserves to make the squad, this means that "Rippers" is going to lose his spot as its a certainty that Bryan Douglas wont. I just feel that Noel Brotherston and Stuart Ripley deserve to be in the squad. Now, sadly, they wont both be in there. This is why I wanted Brotherston in on the left. Hindsight is a marvelous thing. but foresight is wondrous!
