Greatest Ever Squad: Right-Backs

The Greatest Ever Blackburn Rovers Squad is taking shape. With some re-evaluation we are getting closer to a finalised squad.

For some time we've been trying to put together what we, the Vital Blackburn members see (on the whole) as the Greatest Ever Blackburn Rovers Squad.

We've previously suggested and voted on names, but we are now undergoing a re-valuation process which is looking at those that have been selected to ensure "they really are worthy of their place in the Greatest Ever Rovers Squad.

After looking at Bob Crompton & Lucas Neill, who had previously been selected, it has been decided that the final selection of the two right-backs should be:

Bob Crompton &
Keith Newton

So Lucas Neill comes out with Keith Newton coming in.

This means Bob Crompton & Keith Newton will now be the final four from which we will eventually (not yet though!) select from when we finally do compile our Greatest Ever XI. But do remember the squad can and will still change over time at your request. Once we have a finalised our 23-man squad and have then selected a Greatest XI I will reveal how the "appeals" process for change will happen.

Next up for re-evaluation are the left-midfielders/wingers. Look out for this shortly.

Bob "Mr Blackburn" Crompton was a gimmie for this position (as he will a starter in the XI?!?!), his place was NEVER under threat. I have to say (and not because of the way he left for the Hammered!) I am glad Lucas has missed out as he's not in the League of Newton or Berg for that matter. It was AMAZINGLY close between Newton & Berg, in fact we couldn't split them, the deciding factor came down to my words and ultimately vote, "Keith Newton probably in for reasons previously mentioned: England International who was one of the best full-backs during the 60's and 70's could play at left or right-back, simply brilliant! Only missed out on being a left-back as Eckersley HAD to be in. That said Henning Berg was unlucky to miss out on the centre-back selection, but he mainly played as a right-back early on didn't he. Newton or Berg?!?! Not sure a squad is complete without either!" Sorry Berg, I think they were more in favour of Newton though.

I would agree, Berg was a great player for Rovers but greatest ever, maybe not! As i voted for the 2 chosen im happy with the choice

I'd have been happy if Henning Berg had been drafted in, but as it ultimately came down to my deciding vote I had to go with the man I felt most deserved being in and that was Keith Newton. Not much between the two but Newton JUST got it for me.

Sounds about right that HDM.... good call. I'll back you on those.

Good stuff, we WANT the best don't we so I genuinely think that asking people to put forward names rather than simply voting is making sure that the REAL Greats are getting in (even if some are still JUST missing out, but we can only pick so many can't we, maybe we can extend it to a 30-40 man squad at some point though?)
Hughes Da Man
Ah, justice ;-). Maybe if we have a wild card entry at the end then Berg would be the one to be drafted in. Yes he was phenomenal, but for me, it would take something extra special to keep out either of these two true Rovers greats. Arguably the two most deserving members of the entire squad.
