Hughes Eyeing Up Europe

Hughes Eyeing Up Europe

Mark Hughes had previously admitted that he thought Blackburn Rovers would find it hard to qualify for Europe via the Premiership. Following our FA Semi Final defeat this is the ONLY way we can, and he now feels that maybe we still could?

Three successive Premiership defeats (despite leading in ALL three!), the last of which came against Aston Villa at Ewood Park the weekend before our FA Cup exit left us with a mountain to climb to gain entry via that route. Victory over Chelsea would have assured us of a place in next seasons UEFA Cup due to the fact Manchester United would be the opponents and they will have already qualified for Europe, as it happens defeat meant the Premiership's top seven will now gain automatic entry, with the eighth place team taking part in the summers Intertoto Cup.

Rovers currently sit in 13th place, nine points adrift of Portsmouth, but we have two games in hand, so winning both of these will see the gap closed, and if results go our way right back in the hunt. Tottenham Hotspur are also nine points ahead of us in eighth and we face the trip to White Hart Lane before the season is out so we still have plenty to play for, starting with Watford at Ewood on Wednesday in a "must win" match.

Hughes said:

"European football is something we have to aspire to every year if we are to progress as a club.

"We still have a real opportunity to get there again and we are going to have a real go.

"We want to get our reward so it makes our efforts this year worthwhile.

"It is a big ask but not beyond us, given the way we played against Chelsea.

"The teams in and around us have games against each other and the top teams. It will be difficult for them to pick up maximum points while we could.

"The UEFA Cup is our aim but we have put ourselves down for the Intertoto just in case."

Benni McCarthy also has his sights on European football again next season, he added:

"We've just got to pick it up from Sunday's performance and we've got to keep doing well, and pick our performance up from here.

"If we can play like that in every single game, then we are still in with a massive chance."

It's still going to take something special to see us get in but can we do it? IF we miss out on seventh how would you feel about taking part in the Intertoto Cup? Say what you think…

The games in hand are obviously helpful but the old cliché is "you would rather have points on the board." We do have winnable games but we've often lost these this season! To stand ANY chance we HAVE to beat Watford on Wednesday, then to use another cliché "we will then take each game as it comes." If we finished eighth I would HAPPILY take a place in the Intertoto Cup as I think this would make for a GREAT pre season also.

13th in the league, ***** dont improve so quick you've got the rest of the league terrified!!
18/04/2007 01:11:00
Nozzy ur a funny **** arent u!!?? the league is so tight that given are bad run of form its easy to slip down a few places, just ask Fulham who must have thought they'd be safer than they are.
18/04/2007 10:36:00
Shame that such a "poor club" played you off the park at Ewood wasn't it, show's how good your team was! Nozzy you are a the kind of person that ruins Vital Football. Just because you support Liverpool you give it all that all the time, why not be graceful like so many other fans are on this network. You were on Vital Chelsea "giving it all that" towards Rovers saying Rovers and Chelsea paid for our success! As I said there hello I'm pot, meet kettle Nozzy06! WHAT do you propose Liverpool are looking to do with their NEW sugar daddies?!?! hmm let me think, maybe BUY there way back to the top? It's the only way you'll get back there.

Ha Ha well said Hughes Da Man, Now I do like Liverpool as a club and the way they play football, they are building a good team capable of breaking the top 2, but u do get fans that see only their own teams and talk crap all the time. And after all, exactly how long has it taken Liverpool to improve to where they are now??
18/04/2007 11:17:00
Nozzy... Are u not liked on your board!?!??! go back on there.... If we play like we did on Sunday tonight it'll be 3 or 4-0. we always make hard work of these games though but I'm confident.
18/04/2007 12:08:00
I also like Liverpool so agree with Clint, but can't see why people can't see past their own club, people that can't do this are fans of whatever club they follow but not genuine football fans. REAL football fans can see the bigger picture, see past sterotypical views etc. and see the bigger picture can't they.

Nice to see Nozzy is hated here as well! I see no reason why you can't at least get the Intertoto spot!
18/04/2007 17:15:00
Well another win on Sat will keep us interested and there is every chance we can get the Intertoto spot, unless the Geordies make their, we want a trophy, plea to get in. Another good win for you guys tonight merlin. You gunna catch man u? Oh and're views are as useful as a wet fart on a hot day!!!!

Are they really that useful roversman?!?! CRUSHING defeat for Lucas Neill's Hammered tonight wasn't it. I think Chelsea WILL beat Manure when they meet but still think Manure may just take the Title because of their superior goal difference.
