Friedel Re-signed For A Reason!

Friedel Re-signed For A Reason!

Brad Friedel agreed to extend his contract with Blackburn Rovers, seeing him through until 2009 for the simple reason, the club are going places and have a bright future.

Amidst the furore of the devastating and valiant FA Cup Semi Final defeat to Chelsea, the fact that Friedel signed a one-year contract extension, seeing him through to 2009 (at least) may have gone unnoticed? Many of us here haven't missed this though as we discussed our views on him being one of the very best in the Premiership.

Friedel believes, as we all do that Rovers are going somewhere, if he didn't believe this he wouldn't have extended his contract. Although European football looks out of reach now Friedel is insistent we will not give up without a fight and must finish the season on a positive note, not go out on a whimper suffering a post-cup hangover.

Friedel said:

"I would not have wanted to re-sign if I did not think this club could go on.

"We gave Chelsea more than a game. They just happened to get a break in extra-time.

"We have also had our best run ever in Europe. I know what the staff is like behind closed doors. They are very professional and want to make the club bigger and better.

"Our league position at the moment has a lot to do with the injuries we had at the beginning of the season and the amount of games we had to contend with.

"We have 18 points left to play for and we can take them. We are not going to let the season die out. We are too professional for that.

"I know, if we finish on a positive note, the club will be generous to the coaching staff in the summer. We will be able to bring in a few more players."

We must now pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and start with three points against Watford at Ewood Park on Wednesday night if we are to have ANY chance, however unlikely it may be of sneaking into Europe next season. Matches with Watford, Fulham and Charlton consecutively look good on paper and as such could give us a good start but we all know how we have struggled against teams of this ilk this season…

We CERTIANLY are going places, for sure if we can retain the majority, if not ALL of our main players this summer. With others then returning next season and hopefully further quality arriving in the summer the future certainly would look VERY bright. As for Europe it's HIGHLY unlikely but if we play like we can maybe, just maybe seventh or eighth (which would be an Intertoto Cup placing) could see us squeeze in?!?! The simple truth this season was our squad wasn't capable of coping with so many matches, especially with so many injuries but we'll come back stronger and better, hopefully as I say keeping those we have, getting others back from injury and bringing in more quality.

He is a sound keeper has had some brilliant games for you over the last couple of years, when you look into the market place whhere is his replacement?
17/04/2007 05:42:00
The guy shows so much commitment - he could be on goal for Man.U, Liverpool or Arsenal (I left Chelsea out because their keeper's not bad!!!). But he has repeatedly chosen to stay and won Rovers more points than any other player. When he retires they should erect a statue at Ewood for him. He has been the model professional - to think Liverpool got rid of him for Westerweld, lol...... Have you seen, another week, another player linked away from Rovers - this week it is Pedersen's turn - as much as I rate the player, I don't think he would fit into United's team very well.

The thought of thinking of a replacement for Bradders is depressing col8! I'm still hopefully he'll go on until 2011, he'll only be 40!!! The lad we have, Jason Brown has potential, as does the young German goalkeeper we picked up earlier in the season so it looks like being one of these? I quite like the Scottish 'keeper who plays for Hearts but even if we could get him I couldn't see him sitting on the bench for 2-years let alone 4, not sure Brown will do this either though?!?!

Wellsy Bradders is THAT GOOD isn't he, WHAT a goalkeeper, the only one I would even think about swapping for him would be Petr Cech. I'm not sure we'll keep MGP this summer you know? IF (that big if!) he has that £8 million release clause in his deal (as is being reported) we'll lose him, Manure will see him for the future, and not too distant at that. If they don't fancy him Tottenham will come back with a fresh bid, £8 million would be nothing for them but I'd hope he would tell them were to get off, a move forward?!?! I don't think so!

Well after talking about the players that want to leave by all accounts in the papers, it great to have one of the most influential players coming out and saying that he wants to stay cos he believes that the club is moving forward, now I would be more annoyed if Frediel left than Pederson, as as much it would hurt the team Morton is easier to replace than Brad. It now makes sense that should a player sign a contract that like the Spanish sytem another club would have to buy the players contract out, it compensates the players current club whilst allowing them the funds to replace an obviously important player to that same club
17/04/2007 15:01:00
I have to say that Freidel has been one of the clubs most important player over the last 7yrs since his arrivial, he has won Rovers points that NO other player could have, How many games can u remember that we were winning 1-0 with a Frediel save near the end to hold on?? Absolutly a class above is our Keeper and and team in Europe would be proud to have him in the team

Why does'nt anyone mention Enckelman as a replacement?
17/04/2007 15:09:00
cos he's crap! no seriously i dont rate him, thats maybe why Hughes has brought in Brown this yr and Lee last term. You just has to see how many games Enckelman dosnt appear in, or even on the bench to see how much Hughes rates him i think. He has experience true, but of sitting on the bench and not a lot else
17/04/2007 15:15:00
He's sat on the bench a lot recently but I think this is just to give Brown football, albeit only at reserve level (which isn't great) Enck was ALWAYS a stop gap, just been a longer stop than I thought. He is NEVER good enough to replace Bradders, he'll go in the summer anyway I'm sure. Besides he's got to be 32? Not exactly old for a 'keeper but by the time Bradders goes he'll be 34, maybe even 36 (if Bradders stays 4 more years).
