It's Time For Bentley McClaren!

After yet another fine performance from Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley for the England under-21's it HAS to be time for him to be given the chance to step up to the senior side?

Hours after Bentley had excelled once again for England at under-21 level (becoming the first Englishman to score at the new Wembley during the 3-3 draw with Italy, with Matt Derbyshire also among the goals) the senior side once gain struggled as they could only manage a 0-0 bore draw with Israel in their latest European Championship qualifier.

With so many of the current England squad struggling and change needed, if nothing else Bentley's continued form for club and country surely has to see him introduced into the set up when Steve McClaren announces his next squad (assuming he'll get the chance!) to 'freshen' things up, as they have clearly gone far past stale…

After his stunning 25-yard strike and Man of the Match performance Bentley said:

"All my family are here and to go down as the first Englishman to score at the new Wembley is fantastic.

"I have the confidence that I can be part of the full England team, and this is the place to put yourself out there and perform.

"If I get the chance, I'll grab it with both hands."

I personally don't think Bentley could do any worse than what we are currently witnessing, for me he's got the best delivery of an Englishman since David Beckham.

Do you think it is time Bentley gained his first senior call up? Comment below…

I'm not saying Bentley will cure the England problems himself (for this Stevie Mac has to go!) but he won't do any worse than the tripe we again saw on Saturday. Grow a pair Stevie Mac and freshen things up, bring in the likes of Bents.

In all honesty, i think he might solve all the midfield problems we've been having - Obviously he can't singlehandedly fix the forward line, but a midfield of Bentley (or Lennon) Gerrard (or Lampard) Hargreaves (or Carrick) Cole (or Taylor) would in my eyes pretty much sort out everything that has been going wrong. No doubt we still won't know whether that's true in for another few years.

Lennon is magic isn't he, he looked threatening in the first half the other night and did when he came on during the World Cup. I still think Becks has a part to play on the right also so that's three first team regulars with real quality in that area. Spot on with your midfield selection one from either of the pairings you suggest with Hargreaves just over Carrick for me though. I assume you mean Joe Cole (obviously) or Matthew Taylor on the left.
Hughes Da Man
Yep, Cole or Taylor on the left. All the ones in brackets are slightly second place alternatives for my first choice midfield (barring injuries). Don't even get me started on the full backs - Carragher (who admittedly didn't have a bad game, but not as a full back) should be nowhere near Warnock, Shorey, Baines, Naylor who have all done phenomenally well recently, Shorey particularly. Back up should be just that, back up. Surely utility players should only be played out of their favoured position when needs must?

There is so much untapped talent out there but Stevie Mac is just blind to it because they aren't wearing the red of Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal (if possible!) or Middlesbrough (wonder why!), the blue of Chelsea or Everton or white of Tottenham. Most players for clubs others than the "big ones" have played for these sides anyway. I've heard Naylor making waves but how good is he really? Was always sounded out at Wolves but never really stepped up, playing for Celtic could be making him look better than he is? Utility players are essential for major tournaments but when selecting a squad days before a match should NEVER in my opinion be used if you have perfectly capable deputies just being overlooked. I would love to see the likes of Stevie W, Bents, Taylor, Baines, Shorey, Sidwell, Nolan, O'Neil etc. given a chance but Stevie Mac is too cowardly to leave out his "regulars".
