Neill's Rovers Return Approaches

After leaving Blackburn Rovers for West Ham United in January Lucas Neill makes a return to Ewood Park after less than two months as the relegation threatened Hammers come to Ewood this weekend.

Lucas Neill was a good servant to Rovers and despite his somewhat controversial move to "the Hammered" (as West Ham have been christened), controversial in the respect that it was in fact them that landed him, not the move at all as this was always expected, hopefully he will get a decent reception. Neill said when speaking on the official Hammered website:

"It's going to be strange. I've got a lot of good friends there and I'm very respectful of the team, the coaches and the manager.

"I had a good relationship with the fans as well so it's going to be very strange. They need to win for European places and we need to win for survival. We'll have to put friendship aside and do what we've got to do to get the points."

As I say Neill was a good servant so hopefully he gets a decent reception but will obviously come in for some abuse. It would be good to here are few choruses of songs that we have come up with here on vital Blackburn, Can You Here the Rovers Sing - click here.

Here is a small selection.

In the style of Michael Jackson's blame it on the boogie…
"You didn't go for the sunshine
Might have gone for the biscuits
Can't have gone for the trophies
You went for the money!!!"

In the style of DJ Otsi's Hey baby…
"Heyyyyyy, Heyyyyy Lucas
Gree-dy!! (Instead of Hoo Haa),
You're on your wayyyyyyyy to the Championship!"

In the style of Kool and the Gang's Celebrate good times…
"Relegation times
Come on!!
d d d d d d d d wahooo!"

At the time I was bitterly disappointed in Neill's decision to opt for the Hammered but this decision looks very much like being one that will see him drop down to the Championship at the end of the season instead of hopefully ending it with an FA Cup Final. Victory for Rovers will almost certainly condemn Neill and the Hammered to their fate.

As I say it would be good for him to get a decent reception but he'll get some abuse, mostly in jest I'd say. Personally I think Stevie Warnock is a FAR better left-back, is much younger, has a bigger and brighter future ahead of him so we've come off better, where Neill will end up when the Hammered go down I don't know?!?! As for Neill himself with no soar grapes at all as he is a very good footballer but as I've said before I personally don't think he was as good as his agent was telling him, or maybe he was starting to believe. Off the back of a very good World Cup which was ultimately very poor overall he was flavour of the month. Praise maybe got to him, he was never realistically a Barcelona, AC Milan or even Liverpool standard player; well not a regular first teamer anyway and certainly not in the long-term (beyond this season anyway) and I think he knew it, hence the move to the Hammered… the money helped soften the blow also :)

HDM - totally agree that Warnock is the better player. Wouldn't swap him for Lucas. I can't see him playing in the Championship, he has a relegation release clause that states that he can leave, I suppose we will see then how much he is motivated by the money. Govtpros - great okey cokey song...... In some ways I hope Lucas get's the respect he deserves, in other I hope we give him hell.... I just hope we help sent the Spammers down!!!
Wellsy
For me, Lucas didn't do enough whilst he was here to deserve a welcome return (a good year and a half out of six isn't exactly a good return) neither is he good enough to deserve a good boo-ing. He is now simply another one of the vastly overpaid mercenaries in this league, and will no doubt continue to be once West ham are relegated, thanks to his release clause.

QUALITY govtpros :) We've come off far better as a result on Neill leaving haven't we, WHEN the hammered go down his next move will have to be abroad, but he won't see moves to Milan or Barca as he'd hoped, maybe a lower league, or smaller team in Spain to put his Spanish lessions to good use.

Can't really blame Neill for leaving. According to reports he should get 4 times more in wages, not bad for a 29 year old player. He was a good player, but I'd rather having Emerton and Warnock. Both give us another dimension attacking wise.

Money isn't everything though is it Israeli... it appears it is to Neill thought?!?! Totally agree Warnock is a far better footballer and prospect.
