Solid Performance But 'Shocking Decision' Costly

Blackburn were left on the brink of Checkatrade Trophy elimination on Tuesday following a penalty shootout defeat against Rochdale - this was confirmed when Bury beat Stoke U21s.

Tony Mowbray thought Rovers had given a 'good solid performance', especially given the fact over an hour was played with 10 men following the sending off of Scott Wharton, but decisions went against us.

'It was a good solid performance, I think we played for over an hour with 10 men and worked extremely hard. Having watched it back, it was a shocking decision for their equaliser, the boy was miles offside, but never mind,' he told the Official Website.

Mowbray continued: 'We tried to respect the competition but putting a strong team out, and to lose on penalties.'

Joe Nuttall maintained his impressive goalscoring form of late when putting Blackburn ahead. Wharton, looking to force his way back into the boss' plans, was then sent off before former Rovers forward Jordan Slew forced a shootout when he equalised for Rochdale - penalties were won 5-3 by Dale.

The boss wasn't sure if the red card was a sending off but did feel Wharton was perhaps rash in his decision making and will learn from it.

He said: 'You have to ask the question 'was it a red card?' as well. I didn't see it because the linesman was in my way but, if it is, it's a young player making a rash challenge, probably. It's a strange decision so early in the game. If anything, Scott needs a bit more malice, playing in that position. He's hugely disappointed in that dressing room, but it's a learning curve for him.'

A loss wasn't ideal but Mowbray knew he had to 'accept it and take the positives of a gritty performance with 10 men.'
