Blackburn Sign Swiss International

Further additions to the Blackburn Rovers squad during the transfer window were unlikely according to Mark Hughes; but today Rovers signed Bruno Berner.

The 29-year-old left-back, capped 16 times at International level by Switzerland has signed an 18-month deal after a successful trial. A nominal fee (aka very little!) has secured his services from former UEFA Cup opponents Basle. His involvement in this season competition however means much like fellow new arrival Christopher Samba he will be ineligible for the remainder of this seasons campaign.

Berner's impending arrival probably proved the last straw for Jay McEveley as this would have added further competition for places, hence Hughes allowing him to join Derby on Monday.

Berner is the fourth player to arrive at Ewood Park in the last couple of weeks; yet another as a result of a successful trial and will add back-up for Stephen Warnock, unless Hughes has other plans for Warnock?

One thing that you would now think is Berner's arrival will surely conclude Sparky's transfer dealings for the season, at least arriving... won't it? What do you think, more to come, more to go?

This certainly caught me out, last week I said to Clint I couldn't see Berner arriving! This explains Sparky's decision to let McEveley go. I've not really seen a lot of Berner but much like Samba if he's good enough for Sparky he's good enough for me!

If Mickey Gray's days weren't numbered before they are now. Getting late in the day for a move but not sure he'll be here come Thursday morning?
Hughes Da Man
Yep, i think we could see the last of Mickey (if anyone takes on his wages, that is). I noticed in the LET that this guy is primarily a left back, but is happy playing in the centre too - My guess is that from the trials he looked like a decent utility player - With Jay not renewing his contract, and Berner available for free, we saw a way to get a bit of cash, and increase our net worth in players. We've lost a young 'un, gained an experienced international, and earned a bit of cash in the process. Nice work if you can get it ;-)

Wouldn't have thought Mickey Gray would have been on more than Matteo would he? If his wages could be covered by Stoke you'd think someone could cover Mickey's??? It's a good bit of business again by Sparky. Jay is a youngster that has never really made the break through we'd hoped, injuries didn't help. We have a youngster of equal, in my opinion better quality in Andy Taylor with Martin Olsson also coming through. Utility players are fantastic, Berner will be another good one.

I have to question the need for this player, especially when one hamstring or turned ankle can leave us very exposed in the midfield, especially given Dunnys recent injury history. If hes good and a bargain, fine, but that extra salary room from Matteo an Jay leaving wouldve been better invested in a midfielder. Lets hope Hughes can pull one more out of the fire before wednesday.

I think we need one more signing a central midfielder and I never thought I'd say this but if it has to be Lee Hendrie then fine.

Sparky knows what he's doing doesn't he. He will almost certainly pull off a midfield signing, be it full time signing on loan signing. He's always got a plan. Think Mickey Gray and maybe even Andy Todd will still go before tomorrow is done which will free up more big wages. A midfielder is needed, we could manage but as BomBom says an injury or two and we are basically screwed, so he won't take the risk?!?! I'd also agree with MikeyGamst as much as I'm opposed to it if it was Hendrie or nothing (despite saying I'd rather nothing before!) I'd take him just in case.
Hughes Da Man
He will likely go for a loan signing me reckons for financial and morale reasons...

Seen something on Danny Murphy this morning interesting Blackburn, Bolton and Fulham. Prob wont happen but you never know.
im_a_blackburn_rover
Murphy on loan would be a good move.
Hughes Da Man
we have got a very busy feb that will make or break our season... within 2 weeks we play two UEFA legs and FA Cup against Notlob or Gooners plus prem games against Pompey and Everton which are must win games if we want to challenge for sixth place... We need as bug a squad as possible even if that meanbs holding on to Todd and Gray.
Ex Ewood Resident
As long as Gray goes soon, we now have Warnock brought in who's obviously much better, Berner I have yet to see and Taylor in the reserves. Some club must want him?!?! Happy days too Hendrie is on loan to Stoke so it looks like between some French player also on trial and Alessio at Villareal, both should come in on loan to fill in for the injured guys till the end of the season
Clint
Still sure Sparky will get at least one midfielder on loan, although I would have accepted Hendrie (if needed!) glad he's joined Stoke again. With Taylor joining Huddersfield on loan the chances of Gray going despite Berner's arrival have gone down, not sure we could afford to let him go with the games coming up as Ex Ewood points out.
Hughes Da Man
I guess, unless we get a free transfer in, we arent adding to our squad now until June. Fingers crossed for a healthy midfield from here on in then!
