Jay Set For Derby Switch

Jay Set For Derby Switch

It is looking more and more likely that Blackburn Rovers defender Jay McEveley will be leaving Ewood Park again... this time permanently.

Promotion chasing Championship side Derby County have been long term admirers of McEveley with bids of £400,000 then somewhat surprisingly a few weeks later a lesser said to be of around £250,000 both rejected. With talks on a new contract stalling with McEveley out of contract in the summer it appears Rovers will cash in on him now.

Over the weekend Mark Hughes had said that talks with McEveley would continue as he wanted to keep him at Ewood but since then others have spoken of a possible bust up between McEveley and Rovers prompting a bid of up to £1 million, but probably closer to £600,000 to be accepted. The Scottish under-21 and "B" International is now in talks to tie up a move to Pride Park.

Meanwhile despite Hughes himself saying that he probably wouldn't be looking to fill the void left by the injury to Robbie Savage a move for 31-year-old Italian International Alessio Tacchinardi, currently on loan with Villarreal from Juventus is still being heavily mooted...

I'll be sorry to see Jay leave but with Warnock arriving he would again find first team football hard to come across. He would have been a quality cover so will be missed. This will promote Andy Taylor up the pecking order however so we will be OK not forgetting we do also still have Mickey Gray if needed to mention youngster Martin Olsson.

Jay will be missed but we do have some good kids coming through on the left in Taylor and Olsson. What has happened to Sergio Peter lately. Sure, MGP has got into a fantastic run, but Peter still should be poking around here and then. hopefully we dont lose Peter as he is a vital asset for the future

It's not as big a blow as it could have been, but he'll be missed all the same. Sergio been on the bench abit lately. He could be an option to play on the right with Sav out should Bents stay in the middle but with the Maestro and Dunny to come back you'd think Bents will go back there, although performances like that against Luton from the middle and you never know? When all players are fit we do have a really good squad when you look at it don't we.

I thought Jay would get his chance but with Warnock, Taylor and Olsson we're not really short of good left backs, maybe there is something the fans have missed with Jay, not seeing him everyday in training or maybe it's too much money to lose out on for a fringe player, knowing that there are other options that will do as gooda job for the team

Rovers have a very good squad, with the rite level of experience in the rite areas backed (Friedel, Tugay ) with young hungry players around them and a very good manager, Things are looking good for when Hughes can eventually pick for a full strength team

I had hoped Jay would get a chance but as much as I hate saying it as I'd rather our own produce got chances I'd choose Stevie over Jay if I'm honest. Yeah Sparky sees the guys day in day out we only see them occassionally don't we so he knows best, plenty of cover so we'll be OK. It's a good move for him and I wish him well.

I think this is disapointing for us as Jay was touted as a player with a very bright future but to be fair a lack of games in the first team has hindered that. If he was going to be THAT special, sparky would not have needed to sign Warnock OR play Neill at left back for the last month or so. Good luck to him.

We had fears about a possible ageing squad before (with talk of more arriving) didn't we but when you stand back and look at it there is a fine blend of youth, experience and experienced youngish players.
