Sparky Praises Blackburn Youngster

Sparky Praises Blackburn Youngster

Mark Hughes gave special praise to young Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Derbyshire following his goals in the FA Cup win over Luton Town.

A further two goals and a performance of the highest maturity from the 20-year-old in the 4-0 win over Luton at Kenilworth Road has only added to his already growing reputation. Hughes said:

"Matt has come in and had an impact whenever he's played, be it from the bench or starting. He's a great talent.

"We sent him out to Wrexham on loan and he did well and scored plenty of goals, so we thought he could make the step-up to at least Championship level.

"Maybe the step-up he has taken now has come a little sooner than we expected but he's taken his chance.

"I've got a few options up front but when a young player makes an impact by scoring goals then you have to play him."

Hughes also gave a mention to Stephen Warnock he looked the part on his debut:

"We had a problem down the left this season and Stephen is the answer. He showed he will help us improve the team."

Warnock looks all that and more and although only one game this showed enough to suggest he was well worth purchasing as I'd always hoped he would. Once again Sparky looks to have served us very well.

As for Derbyshire I've never hidden my appreciation of him and how good I think he is, given the chances he will take them as he is proving. He's still a little rough around the edges but the more he plays the better he gets. Potentially he could be one of the very best in a few years time!

So after the help of Derbyshire and Warnock we now await our fate; the draw for the fifth round takes place tomorrow lunchtime at 13:30 with Rovers being ball number 14. Although if you want to win you have to beat the best avoiding Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United (especially away!) would be nice.

Who would you like us drawn against? Thoughts below...

Derbyshire should have done enough to retain his place for the Chelsea game in midweek but Sparky could be tempted to opt for a different system or more experience seeing Nonda get the nod or maybe even a return for JR? The partnership down the left of Warnock and MGP looks very promising; add that to the partnership we have down the right of Bents and Emerton and its all looking good!

As for the draw itself a trip to Plymouth wouldn't be bad! It would also take Derbyshire back to a previous loan club where he didn't really get a chance.

Anyone BUT the big clubs, lets get to the semis before we have to face one of those. Derbs didnt get his chance at plymouth cos the manager eho brought him in, left the club very soon after and the new manager didnt rate him. I don't think he will start against the champs, most likely we will see Nonda return but with a potential bench of Derbs, Dunn and Samba, things are starting to come together, if only we had Sav eh?

Lets get to the final before we face one then European football is assured whatever happens! Know the story behind the Derbyshire's failings at Plymouth. Things are looking slightly better a bench containing these three isn't looking too bad is it, hopefully the Maestro will be back from injury although the Stamford pitch will hardly favour him will it.

He certainly is, people who've been here for a while know I'm not jumping on the bandwagon as I've been preaching Derbs' for months! Young Player and probably Most Improved Player of the Year for sure. For the next rounds draw makes sure you say ANY of the big clubs BomBom, then we'll miss 'em!

Derbyshire has the makings of a big player for Rovers and Hughes Da i'll stick up for you when u say u've been preaching about him for months, shows that Sparky will play young players when they are ready.

Cheers Clint, maybe at times it was overkill in my preaching at times but he's been banging the goals in at all levels for a few years now hasn't he. Not trying to take anything away from Sparky but had his hand not been forced (with injuries) I'm not sure he would have played this season. Things happen for a reason don't they so maybe this is the reason we've been handed injuries to our forwards this season for Derbs to make his break through! Sparky shields the youngsters doesn't he but in the coming years as our consistency levels increase (we remain in the top 6 consistently) I'm sure he'll be more willing to bring more through, and sooner.

Hughes looks like he's willing to play the younger ones from time to time, if we were fortunate to play the supposed smaller sides in the cups then maybe more would get games but sure when they're ready they'll get the chance
