Having scored his first senior goal for Blackburn Rovers Matt Derbyshire could not hide his delight; and I (as I'm sure the rest of you do) also share it!
In his ninth competitive match for the club, with all but one coming as a substitute and a late one at that more often than not he opened his Rovers account after scoring the second goal in the 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic on New Years day. When speaking to the Official Blackburn Rovers website Derbyshire said:
"It's a dream come true, brilliant.
"Being a Blackburn fan, and to score in front of the supporters is unbelievable. Even though it was only a tap in, I'm delighted with it, and the three points at the end of it.
"But it's still about being in the right place at the right time, I just reacted off Morten's header and I was in the right spot to put it in. Hopefully there'll be more."
At the start of the season it was very much thought, if not expected that Matty would go out on loan again to gain more first team experience but he stayed with Rovers and continued to score goals for fun again in the reserves and when injuries handed him a chance in the first team he took it; putting in some impressive performances finally getting the goal he deserves.
Despite being only 20-years of age he has a very level head on his shoulders and acknowledges that he will have to remain patient as staring opportunities like the one he got against Nancy in the UEFA Cup in December will be hard to come across for the time being at least, but he is happy to bide his time as he continues to learn:
"I feel I'm now very much part of the first team. The manager has slowly brought me in, and I've had to be very patient, he added.
"I might have to be on the bench for another 12 months, but if I am then I will just learn and learn and learn."
