Hughes Wants Rovers in Top Six

After beating Wigan Athletic on New Years Day Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes is targeting another top six finish this season despite the early season struggles.

A 3-0 Victory over Wigan on Monday saw us complete the double over them, as we had done Middlesbrough the match prior. This made it our third straight Premiership victory, something that hadn't happened since victories over Manchester City, Boro and Wigan between mid September and early October.

Now with players set to return and the January transfer window open Sparky is looking for the run to go on and our charge up the League to continue, not merely to end with us now in eleventh place. We have a game in hand and are only eight points away from sixth position!

After the Wigan victory Hughes said:

"It was very much in our thoughts at the start of the season, and know we have put ourselves in a position to do it again.

"We are up to 11th, so we are there or thereabouts, and hopefully we can kick-on in the second-half of the season as we did at this same stage last season.

"Coming into this match there was a real determination in the dressing room to get the three wins in a row.

"Although we had done well before today, it was never a case of us thinking we had done enough.

"We've put the defeat to Arsenal behind us, although it was never a 6-2 score-line in any way, shape or form."

Confidence is now very high so a run similar, strike that a run better than the one we had earlier in the season when we went six League matches unbeaten will see us right back in contention although two out of three of our next games are against Arsenal and Chelsea…

I have to admit I though sixth place was a long way away as little as a couple of weeks back but a string of wins has proved just how close the League really is so anything is possible especially with players coming back and the possibility of new faces also arriving. Four points from the games with Arsenal and Chelsea and we can REALLY start to think about this!

Sure why not, given that we should have 3 important members of the squad back soon, with any luck, the team should kick on!!

Clint - I have to agree with you (again!) let's get behind the team and get those positive vibes flowing...

We were lagging back last season around Christmas time and we know what happened deja vu anyone... the Admiral, Reidy and Roberts returning will add stength right through the team. Top six here we come!

I think we will end up in the top half, Im not convinced about top six due to European commitments coupled with the size of the squad. Having I think Sparky is ambitious and will want top six again and we'll need the 3 big guys coming back firing to stand a chance.

Top half for sure, get Arsenal, Chelsea and United out of the way with four points minimum and then we'll be set up nicely for the rest of the season... would top six then really be as far away as we might think with players coming back, a couple of new arrivals and some of the youngsters coming through and helping out?
