'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Player Profile: Jay McEveley

Full Name: James McEveley
Date of Birth: 2nd November 1985, Liverpool
Nationality: Scottish
Position: Defender
Squad Number: 24
Internationals: Capped at under-20 & under-21 level for England & under-21 & "B" level for Scotland
Previous Clubs: Everton, Burnley (loan from Rovers) & Ipswich Town (loan from Rovers)

James "Jay" McEveley started his career as a youngster at Everton but found his ways to Blackburn Rovers as part of the academy side.

A strong and mature left-back Jay made his break through into the Rovers first team in the 2002-2003 season. Making his full debut in a League Cup tie in November 2002, the then under-17 Rovers captain subsequently went on to make nine Premiership appearances.

Having represented England at under-20 and under-21 levels, playing in the 2003 World Youth Championships, McEveley switched alliance in 2006 when deciding his International future lies with Scotland; now playing for them at under-21 level, making his "B" debut in November 2006.

Loan spells at Burnley in 2003 and Ipswich Town in 2005 have given Jay more valuable first team experience but he will be looking to further his claims in the 2006-2007 season.

With first team experience already behind and Jay looking very comfortable when he has played, when Lucas Neill leaves, be this January or the summer of 2007 Jay will be hoping to be one of the first in line to replace him in the left-back position.

You worry that he could be one of those "nearly" men before slipping away? Hopefully not though.

At first he offered so much and I thought with experience he would get better. I remember one of his first starts in a rovers shirt was against Beckham when he was at his best for United and he did really well in both legs (cup). I am suprised that Hughesy hasn't given him more of a chance so that he can be judged. I still think we need to sign a left-back though and have for a while. Soon we will also need a right-back! Has anyone seen the Manc player Bardsley play? It is rumoured that we want him as a replacement for Neill

I think that nearly out of the kids in the Rovers squad this one should be given his chance - from wot I have seen of him he is as good as Gray, although personally I dont rate Gray that much I know others like him - Bardsley did have his problems at Rangers recently but is rumoured to be half good!!

I agree,I just have a nagging doubt that this kid,may be injury prone. For a younster he seems to have spent a lot of time on the table. He certainly fit sparkys profile, big and strong.Do not rule out an appearance at centre half, which is where he started.

Thing is we have Emerton playing superb football at right-back, even if he went back into midfeild I think Ooijer or Zurab could, and would slot into a right back position if pushed out of the middle. I'd use Gray or McEveley myself and then look to bring through Taylor and/or Olsson. Bardsley is quality and has played quite a lot at United. It's a tough one, I wouldn't mind using what we have but if he's better?!?!
