With Blackburn Rovers struggling for goals is it time for Matt Derbyshire to be given his chance at Ewood Park?
I know I made a similar call a while back when the injuries were really mounting about maybe bringing in some of the reserve players but this wasn't a very popular theme, most felt reserves are in the reserves because they are just that!
But with Rovers in desperate need of goals, as Jason Roberts is injured, Shabani Nonda isn't really having the desired effect, Francis Jeffers is hardly getting enough time on the pitch to warm up and Paul Gallagher being overlooked altogether, being used as a winger if brought on at all is it time for Mark Hughes to take a gamble and bring Matt Derbyshire in from the reserves? The guy is an out and out goalscorer after all isn't he!
I know that reserve football is genuinely miles apart from senior football, with the massive step up in quality often proving too much for many but with Matty having scored goals for fun in the reserves over the years, doing again this season not to mention he did this regularly when loaned out last season could he be the answer?
We are all crying out for a goalscorer and Derbyshire is just that isn't he? Plus he has the pace that many feel Benni McCarthy needs in a partner.
It is a gamble but with all other options proving fruitless what have we really got to lose? If he comes in for a month and things don't work out Hughes just brings in a forward in January as planned, if it works then he saves Sparky the trouble of having to buy and he can concentrate on other areas. I know I make it sound simple but if he won't take this option then surely he has to give either Francis Jeffers or Paul Gallagher an extended run alongside Benni.
There are only so many times you can say Derbyshire "is one for the future", or "lets send him out on loan for more experience", or even "he's not quite ready yet!" Surely he has been with the club long enough now for us to know what he's all about so if he isn't ready now will he ever be…
