Is it time for Matt Derbyshire?

Is it time for Matt Derbyshire?

With Blackburn Rovers struggling for goals is it time for Matt Derbyshire to be given his chance at Ewood Park?

I know I made a similar call a while back when the injuries were really mounting about maybe bringing in some of the reserve players but this wasn't a very popular theme, most felt reserves are in the reserves because they are just that!

But with Rovers in desperate need of goals, as Jason Roberts is injured, Shabani Nonda isn't really having the desired effect, Francis Jeffers is hardly getting enough time on the pitch to warm up and Paul Gallagher being overlooked altogether, being used as a winger if brought on at all is it time for Mark Hughes to take a gamble and bring Matt Derbyshire in from the reserves? The guy is an out and out goalscorer after all isn't he!

I know that reserve football is genuinely miles apart from senior football, with the massive step up in quality often proving too much for many but with Matty having scored goals for fun in the reserves over the years, doing again this season not to mention he did this regularly when loaned out last season could he be the answer?

We are all crying out for a goalscorer and Derbyshire is just that isn't he? Plus he has the pace that many feel Benni McCarthy needs in a partner.

It is a gamble but with all other options proving fruitless what have we really got to lose? If he comes in for a month and things don't work out Hughes just brings in a forward in January as planned, if it works then he saves Sparky the trouble of having to buy and he can concentrate on other areas. I know I make it sound simple but if he won't take this option then surely he has to give either Francis Jeffers or Paul Gallagher an extended run alongside Benni.

There are only so many times you can say Derbyshire "is one for the future", or "lets send him out on loan for more experience", or even "he's not quite ready yet!" Surely he has been with the club long enough now for us to know what he's all about so if he isn't ready now will he ever be…

I know Hughes is keen on "sheilding" youngsters and it is widely known that those who will be involved in the first team don't play reserve team football, which basically rules out Derbyshire already but what harm will it do? If Sparky won't turn to Matty Jeffers or Gallagher have to be given a run as as much as I may like Nonda he just isn't really cutting it if we are honest.

HDM - I 100% agree with you, Nonda has had his chnace and not cut the mustard... My choice would be in this order though Gally, Matty, Frannie

I would agree with Ex in the order in which they should be picked and that Nonda just hasnt scored the goals that would earn the man a contract at the club. Which is a shame cos he came with a great reputation but sometimes its dosn't work for players in the Premiership

Nonda came with a reputation and tries and tries but that isn't enough is it really. It's a shame as he seems a good honest bloke. Sometimes things just don't work. Come on Sparky make a change up top and give someone else a chance.

McCarthy is not scoring, Nonda is not scoring, Franny is not scoring, Roberts is injured, give these young kids a chance, not like we have anything to lose, gally and matty need there chances or they will be poached next year by clubs who are getting promoted

I am very suprised that Gally has not been given more of a chance, he knows where the net is. From what is saw of Derbyshire he can finish and scored some good goals while on loan at Wrexham. With Nonda and Jeffers not scoring surely they deserve a chance. I can't wait for Roberts to come back though, I still think he is class

Roberts has been top class over the past few years so when fully fit and over the injuries and little knocks he's had we'll see that powerhouse we've seen in recent years. Gally is going to leave soon I can feel it, he'll want first team football and you can understand why, same goes for Derbyshire. It's a double edged knife seeding players out on loan, its good for them but sometimes they come back and want it but if they can't get it they are not happy to wait so leave, so as I say I think both will do if they don't get the chance they deserve! They've been with us long enough now to warrant this.

I think that Gallagher will want to leave soon if he's not given his chance and not in midfield. I can see why he has persisted with Nonda and McCarthy as 2 strikers have to gel but if its not working then something will have to change soon!! Nonda full of hard work but its goals that he'll be judged for!! Either two of them could and should play with Benni at present and then Roberts will get his cahnce when he fully back from injury, Benni and Jason is the front line I think that Hughes likes, if given the opportunity to play them
