The Axe Set To Battle On For Rovers

Skysports.com is reporting the Blackburn Rovers midfielder Aaron Mokoena is set to sign a new contract to remain at Ewood Park.

South African International Mokoena, nicknamed "the Axe" (what a great nickname that is!) would have been out of contract in the summer and therefore would have been free to speak to other clubs in January is due to sign a new two-and-half year deal to see him remain with Rovers until 2009 at least.

Mokoena (who turned 26-years-old on Saturday) arrived at from Belgian side Genk at the beginning of 2005 following a short trail period along with Ryan Nelsen.

The Axe is an honest professional so tying him down to a new deal is a very good move. He'll almost always give 100% and not moan and groan too much when he isn't playing, others could learn a thing or two from him in that respect.

I like the fact that the Axe has been tied up into a contract, he is one of the most under-rated players at the club, who can play at centre back or midfield. He sometimes dosn't look the part but thats just cos he never really gets a run in the team, only about 10-15mins to shore up a game or if Tugay looks done

As with my thoughts on Jeffers, only getting 10-20 minutes here and there (if that) isn't enough for osmeone to be judged. The Axe rarely lets us down even in that little time though.

I am a big fan of the axe, however, due to the lack of central midfielders, he is often played in the wrong position. Aaron should not be thought of to be the new tugay or savage, he is not a central midfielder, rather a holding or defensive midfielder, this is his strength and where we should have him playing
